What to wear with a tweed cap for a man. Baseball caps and caps: how and with what to wear one of the main trendy accessories

A few weeks ago, FURFUR released an article on caps and baseball caps, where they talked about where these hats originated, how they are constructed, and what types of caps and baseball caps there are. Below you can read an excerpt from the article or, by clicking on the first picture, go straight to a slideshow with celebrity tips on how to wear caps and how not to wear them.

Eyelets.
The small openings on each panel of the cap, which serve to ventilate the head, may have a metal line.

Visor. An important part of a baseball cap that protects the athlete from the sun.

Kinds

1. Baseball caps look best
at sports competitions

Example: Leonardo DiCaprio
Place: matches involving the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team

If we briefly tell the history of the popularity of baseball caps, then it is necessary to mention the 1980s, when baseball fans, following the example of athletes from their favorite teams, began to wear these hats to competitions. This is still done today, and it is here, in stadiums, that baseball caps look most natural. Apparently, Leonardo DiCaprio has an extensive collection of baseball caps: in the first row - logos of university sports teams Georgia Bulldogs, Rhode Island Rams, Long Beach State 49ers, Boston Red Sox, in the second row - Rice University, Florida Atlantic Owls, UCLA (University of California) and VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University).

Among other things, DiCaprio uses baseball caps against
paparazzi, pulling the visor right over his eyes.

2. Don't wear a baseball cap with a cassock.
or other formal attire

Example: Pope Benedict XVI
Place: summer residence of the Pope at Castel Gandolfo near Rome

The current Pope Benedict XVI actually loves hats - in addition to the archbishop's headdress and the usual papal cap, he once tried on a cap at the thirteenth FINA Aquatics Championships in 2009. But the Pope in a baseball cap in July 2010, relaxing at his residence, became a real sensation - many newspapermen put him on the covers of their publications and wrote: “With a gold chain and a massive decoration on his chest and a baseball cap on his head, the Pope looks quite like a boy.” . In general, think twice if you decide to wear a cap and cassock.

“Yo, all because I am the Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of all the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the All Church, Superior of all Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Servant of God... aya, buyakasha!”
- The Mirror newspaper headline

3. Don't wear your cap backwards
if you are already an adult

Example: Charlie Sheen
Place: the front exit of one of the New York hotels

The story of Charlie Sheen's downfall can be told in five words: cocaine, ego, television, backwards caps, immaturity. The photo, which shows the 45-year-old actor, shows one of Sheen's main mistakes: it makes you want to say, “Hey, man, you've grown up a long time ago.” But this is not all the complaints about the appearance of the egomaniac who lost his own television show “Two and a Half Men”. The cap from his own (failed) comedy tour, "Truth Torpedo," has his name on it - almost like walking out the door with a sign saying, "Hi, I'm Charlie Sheen. How can I help?".

Adam Sandler is another American comedian
exploiting (in this case consciously) the image of the infantile,
He also wears his caps backwards.

4. With a trucker cap
you will be in the mainstream

Example: Ashton Kutcher
Place: show “Setup” on MTV channel

The fashion police of the mid-2000s sounded the alarm: Hollywood stars were changing into trucker caps en masse. At the forefront of the trucker cap movement was MTV's Set Up host and rom-com hero Ashton Kutcher. The point was not at all in Kutcher, who, what can I say, these caps suited, but in the hundreds and thousands who repeated this simple detail of style after them. Later, Complex.com would include trucker caps in its list of “50 Things That Shouldn’t Happen in Men’s Fashion,” but with exactly the same caveat: Kutcher had nothing to do with it.

One way to wear a trucker cap - with the visor turned 45 degrees - can also be called controversial, but it all depends on the person. After all, to kill all ties to the 2005 pop star image, you can grow a full beard.

5. When going to poker, take a cap

Example: Matt Damon
Place: Charity poker championship Ante Up for Africa in Las Vegas

A baseball cap in poker makes a player a personality - not too eccentric - you didn’t come in a sombrero, but at the same time bright. The name will be forgotten, but the image at the table will be remembered. Thanks to his cap and resourcefulness, Matt Damon, along with his friends Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, won more than $25 million - not in one game, of course - from Ruderman Capital Partners CEO Brad Ruderman.

Example: Eminem
Place: poster from a 2002 youth magazine

No matter what Eminem does now, he will still remain a swag in our hearts - after all, in his youth he was noticed by real black hip-hoppers, and, judging by the film 8 Mile, for good reason. These days he wears his cap less often, but there was a time when Eminem only wore them. If you look closely, you can see that the main white rapper is wearing a durag bandana under his cap. These stretchy bandanas are used by African Americans to keep their hair in place while playing basketball, for example.

This is what Eminem and every other white rapper looks like
without a cap, but with a durag on his head.

7. Size matters

Example: John Travolta (left), Lil Wayne (on right)
Place: airport (left), recording studio (on right)

John Travolta ranks second among Hollywood stars with big heads after Dolph Lundgren. In the photo above you can see how awkward the little baseball cap on top of his head looks. Owners of large heads should recommend a trucker cap, hoods and hats with brims. Another case of a non-standard size is shown on the right - hip-hop artist Lil Wayne wears an oversized cap with a straight peak, which fits all his dreadlocks: a little advice - without dreadlocks, huge caps swing on the head and can easily fly off.

8. Try something new

Example: Tyler, head of the musical group Odd Future
Place: performing at SXSW in 2011

The five-panel cap worn by teen idol Tyler and the cycling cap raved about by streetwear sites Complex and Hypebeast are not exactly new, but very fashionable headwear designs of the last two years. If you put on a truck, you'll look like Ashton Kutcher; if you put on a baseball cap, you'll look like an old fart. Five panels - and you are young!

9. If you're not Hunter Thompson, don't wear a visor.

Example: Hunter Thompson and Johnny Depp as Thompson
Place: Las Vegas and the golf course

The visor suits almost no one and can only be used for practical purposes. It all depends on your income: if you are Hunter Thompson, then you will play golf in a visor, if you are a teenager, you will sell burgers at the checkout. But you should only walk around the city in a visor if you have enough self-irony.

Of course, there are exceptions to any rule: for example, everything is forgiven for a full beard. In the photo, actor Zach Galifianakis is wearing a red visor.

10. Don't obsess over baseball caps.

Example: Mos Def
Place: Mos Def's head

During his career, musician Mos Def changed dozens of hats, including classic baseball caps, but he never gave them preference: after all, there are beanies, hats, Panama hats, military caps, sailor caps, flat caps and bandanas - why limit yourself?

Kepi, baker boy hat ("baker's assistant hat", "baker's son's hat"), captain's hat ("captain's cap") - all these headwear are definitely in fashion and a little similar. The 90s are one of the main trends today. Do you remember what Julia Roberts’ heroine wore in the cult film Pretty Woman? Of course, all the things we saw her wearing before her transformation into a lady, boots, minis, and oversized coats are at the peak of popularity today. You just don’t need to wear them all together. so as not to be branded as a representative of the oldest profession.

The difference between a cap and a cap. Color. Material.

It's simple! The first has more rounded shapes, while the second is quite structured. Otherwise, modern hats can be decorated in a similar way and made from the same material. Today we can find options made of felt, wool, leather, suede and even cotton. Choose material according to the weather. So the cap will become not only a stylish decoration, but also a practical thing. The most popular color that can be seen on the streets this fall is, of course, black and perhaps also blue. Neutral shades are easier to combine with any clothing colors and prints. Grey, khaki, beige and burgundy will complement autumn sets just as well.

Decor

The more laconic the design, the more style we will get in the end. Let the decorations on the cap match the base material. These can be ropes, blackened metal buttons with or without coats of arms, spikes on leather versions, unobtrusive braid. The more contrasting the colors and decorations of the cap, the greater the theatrical effect. This is best left for creative fashion photo shoots, concert performances and shocking lovers.

What to wear with it?

Caps and caps will easily fit into any usual autumn-winter looks. To achieve a trendy outfit, just focus on some on-trend pieces, although for the most part you'll still need basic everyday items. By varying the number of trends, you can control the style direction of the image, for example, go deeper into the 90s style, add retro glam, or stay in the usual casual style. The outerwear you choose will play an important role here.

Fur coat

This is the very bit of glamor that is in fashion today. Leopard print is one of the hits of this winter. Just let the predatory print be made of faux fur. This way you will avoid caricatures of the 60s. In addition, this season there is a lot of colored fur.

Sheepskin

A favorite item of clothing for French and other bloggers is a suede, corduroy or denim jacket/shearling coat made of natural or artificial sheepskin. Wear vests, bright and neutral sweaters, and favorite shirts with any outerwear.

Leather Jacket

If it's not cold in your city, a leather jacket would be most appropriate. Wear it with your favorite jeans, culottes and simple dresses that fit your figure.

Coat

Literally any coat of a simple cut will look natural with a cap. Choose classics, oversized models and military style. You can add another bright trend to your image, a cage.

It's not easy, I know, to look in the mirror and realize that you're dressed like a complete idiot. Can I help you understand this fact? Oh yes, we recommend dousing all the clothes that it makes sense for you to take off with kerosene and burning them.

1. Head-hugging glasses

These glasses are good for those geeks who are going to cosplay the characters from the movie “The Matrix”. Wearing them in everyday life is illogical. They suit few people and make you look frankly not very good. Especially when they are of some wild shades. I saw a bro not too long ago who was wearing these bright orange glasses. I understand that it’s hard to part with old friends, but still remember how stupid you looked before and take it off.

2. Working (sort of) yellow boots

Very often I see dudes on the street in such harsh slippers, who assure everyone that they are terribly comfortable and that these slippers make them tougher. I'm willing to bet that they don't build buildings, don't cut wood, but just consider themselves tough guys who have no concept of "nothing goes."

3. Trucker cap

They were originally worn by truck drivers to protect their faces and eyes from the sun's harmful rays. But now they are passionately loved by young people. They suit few people, and you look undignified in them.

4. Tracksuit

These clothes are good for a run, in the gym, but when you wear them in other situations, you are nothing more than an asshole who either does not take care of himself or is trying to show that he has something to do with sports.

5. Too much perfume

When you enter somewhere, everyone immediately senses by the strong smell that you have arrived. Do not do it this way.

6. Tight clothes

If you're size XL, you don't have to wear size L and convince everyone around you that it's just right for you. Watching your shirt almost burst and your breast fat being outlined is not a sight for the faint of heart.

7. T-shirt with stains

Every time you want to wear a white T-shirt, carefully inspect it for small stains. Take a particularly good look in the armpit area. If there are yellow stains, wash them thoroughly; if it doesn’t help, throw them away.

8. Shoes with square toes

These shoes always looked miserable and reminded me of a downtrodden schoolboy whom no one wants to invite to play in the hallway. And it doesn’t affect this in any way whether it’s in fashion or what designer it’s from - it’s miserable and suits few people.

9. Skinny, skinny jeans

There is no point in saying that they suit you or that you are a hipster and should wear them. Skinny jeans on a guy are the same as leggings on hussars, part of fashion, but it looks wildly terrible. If you have a pair of these jeans, burn them.

10. Bright, shiny and wide ties

Is it worth explaining why this is bad?

12. Baseball cap with visor on one side

She still hangs on her head like a cap. That is, it is not clear how. It won't make you look cool; on the contrary, it will make you look like a jerk.

13. Baggy clothes

At the dawn of the nineties, this, of course, was fashionable. But when that era ended, baggy clothes became inversely proportional to how cool you were. Why? Because clothes should fit well and hide the imperfections of your body, not your entire body.

14. Multilayer polo

Polos are great clothes, but when you wear something like this, it looks like you accidentally put several polos on top of each other.

15. Fur coats

Poor little beavers and other animals! How have you not been killed by animal rights activists yet? Moreover, fur coats don’t suit men... it’s somehow unmanly. You're not Chaliapin, after all?

16. Long coat almost to the floor

It looks too formal, ages you considerably, doesn’t suit everyone (it really suits the guy in the picture) and creates some kind of funereal atmosphere, don’t you think?
You are military? Don't wear these tags, leave them to the military and the dogs.

19. Clothes with a pronounced designer logo

Yes, you can buy some designer clothes with Dolce&Gabbana or whatever else is fashionable to wear on it in large letters. It might even be real. But those people who are able to afford to buy such clothes, most likely? Tags will not be displayed. Sometimes bros in such clothes look as if they stole these clothes from the sales assistants in the store. Or bought it at the market.

20. Tank with a huge V-neckline

When you're thin or fat, it looks much worse than that hairy kid in the photo. Even if you work for years in the gym, you shouldn’t show everyone how well your pectoral muscles are pumped up. NOT worth it!

Originally a quintessentially American accessory, baseball caps, as the name suggests, originated as part of sports uniforms. However, back in the middle of the 19th century, American baseball players wore straw hats, which, it must be said, were bulky and annoyingly often flew off the players at the most crucial moments. The prototype of modern caps was first worn by players of the Brooklyn Excelsiors baseball team in the sixties of the last century. The elongated visors of Brooklyn caps (Brooklynians, it seems, were already style setters in the 19th century) provided excellent protection from the sun, and the caps themselves sat quite tightly on the head. It is not surprising that the practical style was soon adopted not only by players of other teams, but also by fans - this is how embroidery and prints, logos of their favorite teams first appeared on “baseball caps”.

The New Era company introduced the mass production of baseball caps in the 1930s, and they began experimenting with the length of the visors and fit, equipping the cap with an elastic part.

Over their more than century-long history, baseball caps have evolved from a sports accessory into a universal one: they are worn by military personnel and rappers, police officers and street art artists, auto mechanics and stars traveling incognito. And the caps themselves sometimes turn from a modest headdress into perhaps the most important detail of the image: just remember the baseball caps of hip-hop artists, topped with gold stickers, or the Balenciaga leather caps that the brand presented in its spring 2017 collection. Today, baseball caps are produced not only by sports companies, but also by luxury brands: even in the summer collections of Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli, they play an important role. Which, however, is not surprising: a baseball cap is perhaps the most laconic way to transform an image from inconspicuous to minimalist cool (just look at Ryan Gosling) or even provocative. However, as is often the case with accessories, the line between a successful look and a ridiculous look is dangerously thin.

HOW TO WEAR

1

Bend the edges of the visor. Always. Or rather, almost always: if you are a star (yes, exactly a star) of hip-hop, you can leave the visor flat. A bent visor has, among other things, a practical purpose: it better protects the eyes from sunlight and visually elongates the face, which suits almost everyone.

2

A baseball cap should fit perfectly - this is the main secret of its attractiveness. A larger cap will give you a sloppy look, while a narrow cap will simply be uncomfortable.

3

Do not wear caps with the visor backwards. Yes, baseball players often wear their caps backwards to make it easier to wear a face mask. It looks cool enough, but don't try it unless you have a good enough reason. Agree, a cap worn backwards looks pretentious and even infantile.

4

Don't wear it with a suit. A baseball cap worn with a business suit is a completely unacceptable combination. Despite the transformations that the baseball cap has undergone over the past decades, it has been and remains an informal accessory: wear it with bomber jackets, polo shirts, jeans, light sneakers, and baseball caps are inseparable with T-shirts. If you really want to combine a business style with a sporty one, wear a baseball cap with cropped trousers, sneakers and be sure to roll up the sleeves of your shirt; there will definitely be no need for a tie.

5

Be careful with logos. As we grow older, cheerful prints and funny inscriptions should naturally disappear from a man's wardrobe. Of this season's offerings, our favorite is the plain cotton baseball cap, like in the J.Crew or A.P.C. collections. When choosing an accessory with a print, make sure that it does not stand out with its multi-colored neon composition from your image in gray tones.

6

And one more thing: baseball caps with mesh are from the past, push them to the back shelf.

A cap is a stylish and extraordinary accessory that will suit any outfit. The right headwear will help you create a style full of personality. If you want to look bright and impressive, try combining your favorite cap with different things. To figure out how to wear a cap correctly, you need to consider several options.

What to wear with a cap with the visor forward

This is the traditional and most common way to wear a cap. A plain new thing can be worn with denim shorts and a T-shirt. A cap of any shade will fit into this set. It is not necessary to match the accessory to the color of your clothing. The main thing is not what shades you will combine, but what things you will wear.

A stylish cap with inscriptions will complement a casual outfit. Wear your favorite ripped jeans and an oversized T-shirt. A boyish look will make you stand out in the crowd and allow you to behave freely. In such an outfit you will forget about coquetry, because the clothes will put you in a different mood. And who knows, maybe this style will help you find yourself in this life.

You can wear a cap with the visor forward with a tight-fitting knitted dress. Don't think that such accessories don't go with feminine things. It is advisable to choose plain products. They easily adapt to non-standard accessories. An extraordinary set can be created not only with a dress, but also with a spacious skirt. Wear a crop top and a short circle skirt. The cap will fit perfectly into such a playful outfit.

What to wear with a backward visor cap

The style of rappers has long attracted fashionable girls. Today on the streets of cities you can meet bold beauties in the most unusual clothes. This style is introduced into our lives by world-class stars. They are not shy about wearing unusual things and often demonstrate a great sense of style. In everyday life, you can also wear a cap with a backward visor.

Pair a trendy cap with an oversized T-shirt and jeans. A black leather jacket will also come in handy. Shoes should be low-top. With this outfit you will challenge society, so be prepared for surprised looks from others. Young guys wearing a cap will not be looked at in surprise, but girls will attract a lot of attention.

In order for the cap to look beautiful and harmonious on you, it must be selected strictly in size. Always try on a hat before purchasing. Pay more attention not to the style, but to the quality of tailoring. The cap should be made of dense natural fabric. Such a new thing will not cause you any inconvenience, but will serve not only as decoration, but also as a practical detail.
