Already today, August 28, the Orthodox Church celebrates one of the most important church holidays - the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Dormition refers to the permanent twelve feasts, which are dedicated to the most important events in the life of our Savior, Jesus, and His mother, Mary.

The Assumption began to be celebrated many years ago, almost immediately after the death of the Mother of God - Christians, despite the persecution of their religion, revered the Saint for Her deeds. The very word “dormition” signifies death, or sound sleep, and evokes very few joyful thoughts. But the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, first of all, is not the day of Mary’s death, it is the celebration of the reunion of the Son with the Mother in heaven.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, after crucifixion and resurrection, Mary remained on Earth and lived an earthly life for quite a long period of time. It is not known for certain exactly how many years the Mother of God lived, because researchers give different numbers - some say about 22 years, others about 10, but it is known for sure that Mary lived out her last years in the house of St. John the Evangelist.

After the death of Christ, John vowed to protect Mary from all adversity, therefore, when the persecution of Christians began, he took the Mother of God to his parents in Ephesus, where she found her final refuge.

In John’s house, Mary prayed day and night that the Lord would have mercy on her and take her to himself, but for a long time there was no response from him. Our Lady often visited places where significant events took place in the life of Her Son. Also, followers of Christ often came to her, who wanted to hear about the earthly life of their Savior, which Mary joyfully told them about. Above all, Mary became a mother for all of Christ’s disciples and constantly took care of them.

And so, during one of the prayers, Archangel Gabriel descended on Mary, who informed Her that in three days Her earthly life would come to an end. This news made the Mother of God very happy, but before her death, She wanted to say goodbye to all the disciples of Jesus, who at that moment were scattered throughout the world. And at that moment a miracle happened - an unknown force transported all those close to Christ to Mary.

Mary spent the next three days in prayer, awaiting her death, and when the time came, the room in which the Mother of God was located was illuminated with a bright light. At the same moment, the Savior Himself, surrounded by angels, descended to Mary to personally take the Mother’s soul.

After Mary's death, Her body was buried in a cave, which was filled with stones. The Apostle Thomas, who did not have time to say goodbye to Mary, was so upset that he was allowed to say goodbye to the holy remains, but when the cave was opened, the body was no longer in it. That same evening, all the apostles gathered at the table to honor the Mother of God, as She herself appeared to them and said that now She would be with them forever.
