Description and features of non-woven wallpaper. Non-woven wallpaper: full description of technical characteristics

The composition of non-woven wallpaper will be the topic of today’s article, dear readers. My friends ask me a lot of questions about what is the difference between non-woven wallpaper and vinyl wallpaper, which one to glue in which room, which is environmentally preferable, which wallpaper can be repainted and, in general, come with us to the store and help us choose a product.

Nonwoven composition is a non-woven finishing material, which is made from natural fibers– cellulose (up to 70%), textile fibers with the addition of binding polymers. The result is a product similar to paper, but with its characteristics having increased wear resistance, high strength parameters and “breathing” properties.

Its environmental friendliness is obvious, since it is successfully used in light industry to ensure density individual parts clothes. But let's get back to the wallpaper.

Types of non-woven wallpaper

1. Non-woven canvas is essentially the basis for finishing materials from non-woven fabric. This is a completely smooth sheet. Its composition allows you to perfectly strengthen the surface of walls and ceilings. For example, if you traditionally putty the surface, then over time microcracks will certainly appear, which will need to be treated again.

If you stick non-woven canvas onto the surface as a base before further finishing, then thanks to the tear resistance of the material, you will never have to deal with cracks - cobwebs. Painting non-woven fabric is painted or finished with wallpaper, decorative plaster and other materials.

During the next cosmetic repair, the canvas remains, is primed and finished again with the selected material. To avoid being offered a fake, check the composition of the non-woven sheet. To break it, you need to apply force and, looking at the place of the break, you can see the fibers - this is its composition. It is available in different thicknesses, and depending on the quality of finishing of your walls, you select best option. The more problematic your walls are, the thicker the canvas should be.

2.Wallpaper. The composition of non-woven wallpaper consists of a base - the aforementioned low-density canvas, and a top - pure non-woven wallpaper. Natural non-woven wallpaper has a hard and dense texture. “Pure” non-woven wallpaper is produced by pressing at high temperature and under pressure. They are available with a pattern or a specific structure. The non-woven fabric itself is white or slightly yellowish. Wallpaper is produced with factory painting or natural color for painting. But repainting the wallpaper can be done repeatedly (up to 10 times).

This expensive wallpaper, but have whole line advantages:

  • High strength characteristics, reinforcing ability of small cracks.
  • Easy to apply and remove wallpaper.
  • Excellent geometric stability - do not shrink when moistened, resistant to stretching.
  • High aesthetic qualities - visual creation of depth, volume, surface relief, variety of textures.
  • The composition of non-woven wallpaper allows you to repaint the wallpaper many times, which is quite convenient, since material costs are spent only on paint - dispersed or acrylic, and in the end you get an updated interior.

3. Non-woven canvases can serve as an excellent basis for other types of wallpaper, acting as a substrate for a layer of polyvinyl chloride - this is already vinyl wallpapers on a non-woven basis. Their composition is varied, and this is a fairly popular finishing material.

You can talk a lot about non-woven wallpaper and only positively, in my opinion, but in the next article we’ll talk about vinyl wallpaper.

What is non-woven wallpaper? These are fabrics consisting of non-woven cellulose fibers bound by polymers. They leave paper products far behind, being, in fact, their improved analogue.

In this article we will look at all the positive and negative aspects associated with them.

Varieties

Non-woven fabric is soft, dense, moisture-resistant and elastic material, which is used both in pure form for creating wallpaper, and as a basis for various decorative layers.

Based on this, the following types of wallpaper can be noted:

  1. Non-woven. They are either a finished product with a front design, or textured surface waiting to be painted.

  1. Vinyl. Here the visual component is already formed by a layer of vinyl and can have many different patterns. It is noteworthy that such models have very high strength characteristics.

  1. . Previously, such wallpaper used paper as a base, but now it is successfully replaced by the material in question.

Usually, when they mention non-woven wallpaper, they mean one of the first two types of products; we will analyze their features further.

Advantages and disadvantages

The technical characteristics of non-woven wallpaper, like any other finish, can be divided into positive and negative:

Advantages

  1. Water-repellent properties.

This quality is worthy of being mentioned first, as it significantly expands the capabilities of this cladding, allowing:

  • Use in areas with excessive humidity, such as the kitchen, basement and even the bathroom.

  • Washing contaminated surfaces using household chemicals.

But having information about its shortcomings, you can always take care of eliminating them in time.

  1. Translucency. What to do if non-woven wallpaper is see-through? And this is quite possible if you use clean non-woven fabric. In order to prevent this problem, you should either take care of the uniformity of the base, which will be helped by leveling and using a white primer, or be sure to cover it with paint.

Tip: when painting, use suspensions that create a vapor-permeable layer. Otherwise, you will deprive the wallpaper itself of this opportunity, which will lead to the spread of fungi and mold under its surface.

  1. Unpleasant smell from non-woven wallpaper. The first couple of months after gluing, the finish in question may emit toxic fumes. But this is only possible if you purchase suspiciously cheap paintings from an unknown manufacturer. High-quality specimens are environmentally friendly and do not have any specific aroma.

Advice: if, by coincidence, you nevertheless become the owner of low-quality products, then thorough ventilation or application of paint coating, which will limit the contact of non-woven fabric with air.

  1. Vulnerability of protruding elements of vinyl. Despite the abrasion resistance, the textured parts of the relief surface can be broken off and scratched, which should be taken into account if small children or animals live in the house.

Auxiliary markings

When purchasing, pay attention to the special symbols that determine the level of a particular technical characteristic of the wallpaper:

  • Moisture resistance is determined by the number of waves; the more there are, the higher it is. If there is an additional brush silhouette, this means the possibility of using special tools for more thorough removal of dirt.

  • Lightfastness is indicated by a semicircle or a circle with rays.

The growing popularity of non-woven wallpaper is dictated by the properties and quality of the material, and safety for health.

Even a small store can boast a rich assortment of this type.

Manufacturers have not skimped on producing rolls of various textures and colors.

New collections take into account fashion trends and new directions.

Technical characteristics of non-woven wallpaper

The composition of non-woven wallpaper includes non-woven material, made from textile and cellulose fibers, which are interconnected by a polymer binder.

The fabric structure does not stretch.

During gluing, the non-woven fabric is not subject to any type of deformation.

The wallpaper sticks well to different surface: porous concrete, plasterboard, plywood, plaster wall.

Fire resistance is higher than that of conventional paper counterparts.

Non-woven wallpaper is in great demand in construction stores. What are they made of, what varieties are there, and how to care for them?

What is non-woven wallpaper?

When considering non-woven wallpaper, first of all, let’s figure out what material they are made of. Despite the non-standard name, non-woven fabric is essentially ordinary cellulose - or rather, cellulose fibers tightly bound together special impregnations and “diluted” with some polyester. Although non-woven material cannot be called completely natural, it has good indicator environmental friendliness - and in particular, it is hypoallergenic, which gives it special value.

Non-woven and paper wallpaper can be considered “close relatives” - since cellulose is the basis of both varieties.

  • But its percentage component, the method of pressing and processing are very different. Therefore, non-woven fabric has several unique and important properties. The material combines softness and increased strength
  • - it does not tear and straightens out quickly if it is crushed.
  • When wetted, non-woven fabric dries quickly and does not shrink - its volume remains the same.
  • The material interacts well with different types of paint.
  • Non-woven fabric is very fire resistant.
  • The material practically does not get dirty, has dust-repellent properties, and can be easily washed without fear of damaging the non-woven fabric.

Each of us has seen non-woven fabric at least once in everyday life - the material is often used as soft packaging or as a lining for clothes. But of course, the material gained its greatest popularity precisely thanks to the advent of non-woven wallpaper, which instantly occupied a wide niche in the market.

Advantages of non-woven wall coverings

Despite the great competition, non-woven fabric remains one of the leaders in the construction market. What advantages ensure good demand for it?

  • First of all, non-woven fabrics are very easy to install. They can be glued to any wall - concrete and plasterboard, wood and plaster, to a chipboard surface, and so on.
  • Due to its strength and softness, wallpaper does not tear or form unsightly “creases” when crumpled - which means that gluing such material becomes a convenient and pleasant process without any annoying incidents.
  • When installing wallpaper, glue is applied only to the wall - the canvas itself does not need to be treated. This saves time.
  • Once saturated with glue, the non-woven fabric does not decrease in size and does not shrink, remaining the same as it was.
  • Ready-made non-woven fabrics on the wall allow air to pass through well - so there is no formation of excessive humidity and there is no fungus. They are also resistant to fire - in the event of a fire, the wallpaper will resist high temperatures for a long time, making it possible to quickly extinguish the fire.

Although non-woven fabric is thin, wall coverings made from this material are quite dense. If there are minor surface defects and unevenness on the wall, it is not necessary to eliminate them - a non-woven fabric glued on top will successfully hide the imperfections.

Another important advantage non-woven wallpaper - the fact that they can be painted, and several times. Many people deliberately choose a simple non-woven fabric so that they can then decorate the wall at their own discretion. And finally, if the canvas needs to be removed, this will not cause much difficulty - it will easily come off the wall even without prior wetting.

Types of non-woven wallpaper

Non-woven coverings are presented in several varieties on the construction market. In general, they can be divided into two main categories: canvases made entirely of non-woven fabric, and canvases in which this material acts only as a base. We will list the main varieties and talk about the features of each of them.

Non-woven wallpaper

Directly non-woven fabrics are fabrics made exclusively from of this material. Such wallpaper consists of several non-woven layers, is quite dense in appearance and touch, but at the same time has a high degree of transparency.

Non-woven wallpapers are:

  • smooth;
  • embossed;
  • factory painted;
  • having an applied pattern, but prepared for painting.

The material is pasted onto a wall that has been pre-treated with glue, and there is no need to leave a “reserve” at the joints - since the material does not shrink or stretch, non-woven wallpaper is attached without further “rework”. The material allows air to pass through, does not attract dust, and does not fade under sun rays. True, fabrics with a pronounced surface relief can get dirty over time - but non-woven fabric is quite easy to clean.

Let's agree right away - non-woven wallpaper is quite expensive. However, it is not recommended to look for overly cheap options here - if you want to get high-quality non-woven fabric, choose trusted manufacturers with market average prices.

Vinyl wallpaper on non-woven backing

The most popular type of non-woven wallpaper is vinyl canvas on a non-woven basis. The fact is that such paintings combine best qualities wallpaper made from “pure” vinyl and “pure” non-woven fabric - but the shortcomings of the materials individually are smoothed out. In particular:

  • Durable vinyl wallpaper can be hung indoors with high humidity- for example, in the kitchen. The vinyl surface of the canvas will not deteriorate from a stuffy and humid atmosphere - and the base, made of non-woven fabric, will not allow dampness to spread under the wall covering.
  • Vinyl is very resistant to mechanical damage - it is more difficult to scratch than non-woven material. Therefore, vinyl covering based on non-woven fabric is often pasted in children's rooms or in apartments where there are pets.
  • Vinyl comes in a wide variety of colors and textures. Like non-woven fabric, it hardly attracts dirt and dust. But if dirt collects in the three-dimensional pattern of vinyl-non-woven wallpaper, then the vinyl surface can be washed - often even using household chemicals.

Thus, vinyl coverings with a non-woven base remain “breathable”, resistant to fire and easy to install - but at the same time easier to clean, have a large margin of safety and are not afraid of moisture.

Non-woven paper wallpaper

Non-woven paper wallpaper is the most inexpensive type of wallpaper. What advantages does a non-woven base give to this type?

  • The ability to create interesting three-dimensional textures. A special filler is introduced between the layers of wallpaper, then the canvas is pressed - and the result is a convex pattern that makes the paper covering more attractive.
  • Dampness - main enemy paper wallpaper. The non-woven base acts as waterproofing and does not allow fungus and mold to grow under the canvas.
  • Paper coverings based on non-woven fabric are easier to stick to the wall - they do not tear, are easily smoothed out and do not deform during the drying process.

But of course, even a non-woven base does not eliminate some of the shortcomings of paper fabric. It is still not recommended to use such wallpaper for kitchen wallpaper, and its fire resistance also remains very low.

Non-woven textile wallpaper

Textile wallpaper with a non-woven base is considered a luxury option. In the interior, such a canvas looks the most solid and attractive. The advantages of textile options include:

  • elegant appearance;
  • durability and resistance to fading;
  • good thermal insulation and sound insulation properties;

The most noticeable disadvantage of textile fabrics is their ability to accumulate odors. And the non-woven base slightly weakens this drawback - thanks to it, the breathability of the canvas becomes better, the wallpaper is continuously “ventilated”.

The non-woven base also facilitates the process of gluing the coating. Since the glue is applied to the wall and then the non-woven backing is applied to the surface, there is no chance of glue getting on the fabric itself.

Non-woven wallpaper for painting

One of the most popular varieties is non-woven wallpaper, originally intended for further painting. What do they look like and what are their benefits?

First of all, such coverings are divided into two internal categories: purely non-woven and with a vinyl top layer.

  • Non-woven wallpaper for painting is usually smooth and does not have a pronounced texture. They are good to use where you plan to make a uniform, smooth wall. Painting such canvases is very easy - due to the lack of relief, all the work can be done with a soft roller in just a couple of hours. Both acrylic and water-based or latex paints are suitable. By the way, you can paint a wall covered with pure non-woven fabric up to ten times - and each time the color will be rich and bright.
  • Wallpaper for painting with vinyl covering provided with more textured options with a voluminous pattern. Painting them is somewhat more difficult, and only about five paintings are allowed - but at the same time, the wall looks more interesting and original.

Of course, non-woven coverings for painting require additional work And extra costs for paint. But they allow you to create unique design and give the wall exactly the color you would like to see - rather than choosing between ready-made options.

Features of caring for non-woven wallpaper

In order for the wallpaper to retain its freshness and attractiveness for a long time, the walls require care. How should you handle non-woven wallpaper?

  • If the covering is made only of non-woven fabric, it can be subjected to both dry and wet cleaning - the material tolerates moisture well. By the way, this also applies to canvases painted with your own hands - if you used waterproof paint, the non-woven covering can be safely washed.
  • Wet cleaning can also be carried out if, with a non-woven base, the surface of the canvas is made of vinyl.
  • It is recommended to clean paper and textile coverings with a non-woven backing using “dry” methods - carefully treating them with a soft brush or vacuum cleaner. These varieties tolerate exposure to water much less well.

In any case, the recommended cleaning method wall covering usually indicated on its packaging. Resistance to water is marked using wavy lines - if there is only one line drawn, then the canvas can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth, if there are two, then it is permissible to use a wet cloth. The most resistant cloths are those with a brush on the packaging - you can even use cleaning products when cleaning them.

Non-woven wallpaper is modern, stylish decorative coating walls, wallpaper, which have conquered the market literally over the last ten years. And this is the reason for the high performance properties of wallpaper and their external persuasiveness. Non-woven wallpaper is a two-layer coating, namely a non-woven backing and a decorative top layer. It was the backing that gave the wallpaper its name.

The non-woven base is a coating that is definitely superior to paper in its strength. Non-woven fabric is a fabric made of compressed fibers. Cellulose fiber and special additives make such wallpaper wear-resistant, elastic, durable, resistant to scratches and low pressure.

In a word, where paper wallpapers are at risk of deformation, non-woven wallpapers make full use of their technical properties.

Pros and cons of non-woven wallpaper

The advantages of this wallpaper are truly a long list.

Advantages of non-woven wallpaper:

  1. When the house shrinks, such wallpaper does not deform;
  2. Wallpaper for painting can be repainted 6-7 times;
  3. To remove this wallpaper, you do not need to moisten it with water - it is already easy to remove (and how much time this saves);
  4. Low glue consumption, because you only need to coat the wall, and this also saves time;
  5. Non-woven wallpaper is breathable, because it has the ability to allow air and water to pass through, but if a vinyl layer is applied to the non-woven material, then these properties are lost;
  6. This wallpaper has high light resistance;
  7. They are not toxic;
  8. Non-woven wallpaper can be glued to any surface, plasterboard, concrete, wood, chipboard.

Pros rarely exist without cons, which, however, are few in number.

Disadvantages of non-woven wallpaper:

  • Compared to paper ones, the cost of non-woven ones is significantly higher;
  • They do not have high thermal insulation and sound insulation.

On average, the characteristics are not bad: they dry quickly, they are environmentally friendly, their service life is considerable with proper care, they are any width - if you want, take the standard ones, or if you want the meter ones. All you need is coating the walls with glue, and, of course, preparing the walls.

Non-woven wallpaper: reviews

So many opinions, so many reviews. But if the pros and cons can be read in the “characteristics” section, then the information content of the reviews is higher if there are some practical advice. For example, which brand to choose, what roll sizes are preferable for certain rooms, how many rolls are needed, how quickly certain wallpapers dry.

The following points can be noted in the reviews:

  1. The color of the surface before gluing must be uniform;
  2. Only special glue for non-woven wallpaper should be used (how much and what proportions are indicated in the instructions);
  3. If priming the wall is necessary, do not avoid this step;
  4. First, check the roll of fabric for defects, and only then cut the strips.

Much depends specifically on the type of wallpaper.

Types and characteristics of non-woven wallpaper

Here it is worth explaining what exactly non-woven wallpaper is, and what non-woven-based wallpaper is. Many people confuse these concepts and then are surprised that the wallpaper does not meet their expectations.

Each type of wallpaper has its own fundamental differences, they affect both the price and the features of using wallpaper.

What both types of wallpaper look like:

  • Non-woven wallpaper can be called those wallpapers that are made exclusively from non-woven material. This is a multi-layer coating, all layers are even and smooth, with the exception of the top one. Usually the top layer is embossed, possibly hot embossed.
  • Non-woven wallpaper. The first, bottom layer in such wallpaper is non-woven, and the second is either textile or paper. Upper layer and determines how the coating looks overall. The top layer, of course, is also responsible for throughput wallpaper, for the possibility of painting them, etc.

And although in essence there are two different types wallpaper, both are popularly called non-woven wallpaper. After all, what are they made from - non-woven fabric, to one degree or another.

Non-woven wallpaper: composition

In terms of its composition, non-woven wallpaper is a finishing non-woven material made from natural fibers. It contains up to 70% cellulose, and also contains textile fibers and, of course, binding polymers.

The structure of the product resembles paper, but its characteristics indicate increased wear resistance, high strength indicators, and so on. important property like “the ability to breathe.”

The material is considered environmentally friendly and is also used in the clothing industry.

Designations on non-woven wallpaper

Markings on wallpaper help you figure out how to use wallpaper correctly, how long it takes to dry, and whether it can be washed. There on the label you will read whether they comply with GOST, in a word, a whole characteristic in symbols.

Pictures-designations on the wallpaper:

  1. Brush and three wavy lines. Wet care possible.
  2. Sun. Good light fastness.
  3. Brush at a vertical line. The glue is applied only to the wall.
  4. Brush on horizontal line . Glue is applied to the wallpaper.
  5. One wavy line. Wallpaper is washable.
  6. Three wavy lines. These are super washable and abrasion resistant.
  7. Half of the sun. Average light fastness.

There are also letter designations, for example, if the wallpaper (any) is intended to be painted, you will see the letters “PAGE”.

Palette of colors

Typically, non-woven wall wallpapers are not the brightest colors, although, of course, they are in the palette. It’s just that the texture of non-woven wallpaper itself is bright enough that it’s not necessary to play it up with color. But bright colors can be obtained if you decide to paint the wallpaper.

Wallpaper, produced in Italy, is a stylish print, attention to detail, modernity. But Russia is not far behind in wallpaper design - from strict stripes to the most interesting designs with flowers.

As for the fashion palette, in the 2016 season deep, rich colors natural shades. For example, juicy olive, rich eggplant, soft emerald.

Non-woven backing for wallpaper

Construction non-woven fabric is often used as a backing for wallpaper. This is a rolled non-woven material made from modified cellulose. This material is valuable because it is vapor permeable, which promotes natural ventilation of the walls. A natural ventilation, in turn, is a good removal of moisture and dampness from the room.

The non-woven cover, moreover, perfectly levels the wall, removing minor wall defects. This ensures the elasticity of the material. The length of a roll of construction non-woven fabric is 10-12 meters, width - from 0.6 m to a meter.

Non-woven backing can be used in all rooms.

Is it possible to wash non-woven wallpaper?

If you see the corresponding designation on the wallpaper, it means that you can definitely wash it. They dry quite quickly, just don't overdo it with washing.

Tips for cleaning wallpaper:

  • If you see stains, for example, from fingerprints, try erasing them with a regular eraser - often this is enough;
  • At serious pollution place a paper napkin on the stain, then iron the area with a heated iron;
  • Remove small stains with a dampened sponge;
  • Wash the wallpaper carefully, without special effort, use either light soap solution, or mild cleaning agents.

Smooth wallpaper with flock can also be washed warm water with dissolved soap. If varnish gets on the wallpaper, you can remove it with nail polish remover.

Why does non-woven wallpaper bubble?

If bubbles appear on the wallpaper, it means that the wallpaper gluing technology has been broken. You either didn’t prepare the wall, or you didn’t apply the glue correctly (or the glue was wrong), or maybe temperature regime broken.

Bubbles, by the way, are not only an unaesthetic sight, they also risk a large delamination of the wallpaper and the likelihood that insects will begin to breed under them.

You can remove bubbles like this:

  1. Smooth the fabric with a roller or soft cloth;
  2. The bubble can be pierced with a medical syringe, and only then smoothed out;
  3. A voluminous bubble will help remove the smooth blade, and after making an incision at the bottom of the swelling, fill the voids with a syringe.

Do not glue wallpaper at temperatures above 23 degrees, apply the adhesive composition evenly to the canvas, purchase glue with a pink indicator. And lubricate the strip of fabric correctly: from top to bottom, from the center to the edges.

Do non-woven wallpapers shine through after drying?

Non-woven wallpaper can be seen through if it is light, thin, and the wall was originally darker. You can also solve this problem in the store - attach a piece of wallpaper to some surface, preferably multi-colored. It will be immediately clear whether the drawing will be visible.

If you need light and thin wallpaper, prepare the wall carefully: even out its color with a white primer or white paint.

Ask the store how the wallpaper will behave when hung, how to store the wallpaper if you are still planning a renovation, what kind of glue the manufacturer recommends purchasing.

How to glue non-woven wallpaper (video tutorial)

Non-woven wallpaper – good choice, use them correctly, glue them according to the instructions, choose convenient size. And then the price will be justified, and the repair will not take too long, and you will be completely satisfied with the result.

Good choice!
