The App Store has already accumulated plenty of navigation applications - from simple tools for tracking movement using GPS coordinates to sophisticated navigators. Application Galileo Offline Maps, which we will talk about today, lies somewhere in the middle between these poles. Although it is not a full-fledged navigation tool, it is not a simple map atlas either. In our opinion, Galileo Offline Maps is more suitable for planning and tracking various routes (especially walking or cycling), which is facilitated by several useful features that we will talk about later.

The interface of Galileo Offline Maps is very simple and ascetic - a map, a few buttons and nothing superfluous. By default, the program uses OpenStreetMap maps, which are quite easy to use, although they take some getting used to after Google Maps. However, if you wish, you can add support for Google Maps to the program.

You can immediately click on the top of the program's five buttons to display your location on the map. By clicking on this button again, you will also connect a compass, however, it will look strange - if in the native iOS application the direction relative to the cardinal points is shown near the mark of your location when the map is stationary, here the map itself rotates:

The second button shows the search bar. Unfortunately, the search works extremely poorly. Firstly, he doesn’t like names in Russian. Secondly, even if you enter names in English, the results may still be unexpected.

For example, when asked to find a street in Moscow, the application showed us a point in Siberia above the Arctic Circle. The application does not even find the capitals of states if you enter them in Cyrillic:

The third button in the Galileo Offline Maps interface (labeled Rec) starts tracking your coordinates. As you move, a route line will be drawn on the map. At any point on the route (and indeed anywhere on the map) you can create a POI; to do this, just hold your finger on the screen.

The next button opens a fairly useful pop-up with the not very correct name “My Collections”. All the points and routes you create (called here “tracks” - just like in a music player :) are “collected” here. They can be grouped into folders, for example, in accordance with the location of the routes, their themes, etc. For tourists, this opportunity will be especially valuable.

In addition, individual POIs and routes, as well as entire folders, can be exported in KML, GPX and CSV formats and sent by e-mail.

The last icon in the Galileo Offline Maps window contains the basic settings of the application. First, try changing the type of maps to find the one that best suits your needs (for example, there are even special maps for cyclists).

In addition, what follows is the most important setting, which could deserve a separate button on the main screen - the offline map mode switch. However, before you enable it, you should know that it is not free, as are most of the features described above. Although the program is called Galileo Offline Maps and is distributed as a free application, the developers want $1.99 for support for offline maps. And this is not the only thing you are offered to spend money on:

The ability to create tags and track routes also costs two dollars. Thus, full functionality will cost you 6 dollars less 1 cent. To be honest, we still don't understand what the point was in adding the ability to include all features at once for $5.99 to the list of in-app purchases. This is a paradoxical case when wholesale purchases are more expensive than retail ones - $1.99*3 = $5.97 versus $5.99 :)

Looking at the App Store, you will see a fairly large number of angry reviews (especially from American users) with the following content: “WTF?!! I paid you two bucks, where are my offline cards? Nothing has changed!” The main mistake of the program's creators is that they do not offer any clear explanations on how to work with offline maps. In fact, you will need to create and load them into the program yourself, but the program itself does not say a word about this.

Instructions for creating maps are posted on the application's official blog. You are invited to download a cross-platform java application to your computer, in which you will need to select a map source and indicate the name of the area for which you are creating a map cache. The resulting file will need to be uploaded via iTunes to Galileo Offline Maps.

There is another way (we don’t know which is easier :). The program automatically saves all the maps you view into its internal cache. Thus, before a trip, you can zoom in on the map and rummage around the surrounding area so that the maps are saved in the cache. You can manage caches in the program settings - their size is taken into account separately for each type of card.

It's time to take stock. Several obstacles stand in the way of the success of Galileo Offline Maps: firstly, the lack of any help or tour of the program - hence the lack of understanding of the functions among average users and low ratings in the App Store; secondly, the names of menus and functions are not very good (for example, the route is called a track, and in the “Support” item, instead of providing help to users, they ask for donations); thirdly, the inflated commercial appetites of the creators - with all due respect, $6 for a full version of the program is too much. We ourselves are involved in creating applications and understand perfectly well that each application is the result of many months of work, which we want to pay back quickly, but users will never understand this;)

Otherwise, Galileo Offline Maps is a quite decent program.

To study maps in WoT, you need to go into the game, log into your account, wait for people to create a training room, and after that you can go to study this or that new map. The mod solves this problem by allowing the tanker, even without a network connection, to fly on any battlefield and carefully inspect it.

Possibilities

  • Absolutely all the functions of a standard camera in replays.
  • Disable and enable the combat interface.
  • The new version has added a map selection interface; now you don’t need to delve into the settings of the configuration file.
  • Possibility to choose the model of any tank.

Changes in the new version

  • Optimization of work and fix of many glitches.
  • Added effects of shooting and destroying cars.
  • Activated physical model.
  • Window for selecting vehicles before loading the map.
  • The configuration file has been expanded for fans of fine-tuning (it’s called observer.xml, you need to open it using Notepad++).

Now let's talk about how to manage the mod. Install a free camera, launch the game and wait for the end of the introductory video with the game logo. Then press Ctrl+N and select the desired tank. After that, press Ctrl+B and select the card. The loading will begin, after which you can fly freely around the map using the standard tank movement keys.

Do not confuse this mod with, this is not a cheat, because you won’t be able to fly freely in battle.

Google Maps has an offline mode, which is ideal for those times when you need to determine your location without an Internet connection. Millions of people use Google Maps every day, so downloading maps to your phone is a very useful feature. You can learn how to use these features by reading our guide.

How to Use Google Maps Offline

To start using offline maps, you first need to download the required data:
  1. Open the Maps app while connected to the internet and find your desired location on the map.
  2. After that, open the side menu by swiping from the left edge of the display to the right. Or click on the button in the shape of three lines, which is located in the upper left corner. In this menu, go to the “Downloaded Areas” section.
  3. Now click on the “+” button at the bottom of the screen and then the program will ask you to select the area you want to use offline. Once you have done this, click “Download”. You also need to name the selected area.
  4. Downloaded maps are naturally available in the “Downloaded Areas” section. Now there is no need for an internet connection if you are within these areas.
Limitations of offline cards

Of course, the functionality of saved maps has limitations, mainly regarding the size of the location. You won't be able to download a map of, say, all of Russia, as the maximum amount of data you can save is 1.5 GB.

Downloaded maps tend to take up quite a bit of phone storage space, so we recommend using a Wi-Fi connection rather than a mobile one. It is also worth noting that offline maps are stored on phones for 30 days, after this period they will be deleted.

Despite the fact that affordable and fairly fast mobile Internet is gradually beginning to spread in Ukraine, the issue of navigation still remains quite acute. There is nothing worse than being stuck on the outskirts of an unfamiliar city, suddenly realizing that there is not a penny in your mobile account, and the Internet has been disconnected for non-payment. And you could find your way using your smartphone, but for some reason your favorite application refuses to work without a network.

Also, when traveling abroad, you should remember that roaming traffic is often not the cheapest. And the route from the airport to the hotel, laid out online, may turn out to be more expensive than the room itself.

It is for such a case that you should have a high-quality offline map in your arsenal. Moreover, unlike the paper version, it does not weigh on your pocket and spends tens of times less time searching for the desired address.

Today we will present to you the top five offline maps according to the IGate editors.

MAPS.ME

For a long time, MAPS.ME maps have been one of the best offline navigation apps. They work fully without connecting to the network, they can build routes for both cars and pedestrians, which, you see, is very valuable.

The application is based on the OpenStreetMap project, which is supported by hundreds of thousands of independent users around the world, who every day upload hundreds of gigabytes of photographs of roads, coordinates of interesting places and attractions to the network. Accordingly, MAPS.ME data is constantly updated and updated.

A significant advantage of these maps is also their clear and easy graphics, as well as the ability to select maps for downloading manually - because the entire database of maps from almost 350 countries will take about 100 GB of the memory of your mobile device.

The application offers a simple and at the same time detailed search for the location of objects on the map (independent of the network connection), in addition, you can directly enter the coordinates of the object.

"Yandex maps"

After the last update at the beginning of 2016, the Yandex.Maps mobile application became a full-fledged offline navigator and thoroughly pushed aside its competitors. The developers note that this is the largest update in the entire history of this project.

Now all the features of Yandex.Maps are available offline, and users just need to download the application to the device’s memory to save on traffic payments.

Interestingly, even in offline mode, the application will show the user not only where exactly the place he needs is located on the map, but will also provide all the available information related to the object he needs. We are talking about the work schedule of companies, their telephone numbers, contact information, as well as transport schedules.

Interestingly, now “Yandex.Maps” offline will even show the estimated cost of rooms if the user was looking for a hotel.
It is also worth noting that the new Yandex.Maps have become much “lighter”. For example, a map of Moscow will take up only 144 MB, whereas previously it would have required 1.9 GB. This was achieved thanks to the transition to vector maps.

Google Maps

These maps are highly detailed, have an easy and clear interface, not overloaded with unnecessary details and colors. Like any other product from Google, maps are constantly updated and receive new features. So, for example, when building a route, you can choose not only the option for drivers or pedestrians, but even for cyclists.

If previously Google Maps only made it possible to view the map offline, the company promises that soon it will be possible to fully use navigation and search for specific destinations. In addition, it will be possible to view various information on objects (opening hours, contacts and even ratings).

You can load either specific settlements or individual regions of the map by selecting them separately. After downloading, they will become available at any time - in case of “falling out of the network,” Google automatically goes offline.

At the same time, it is worth noting that Google Maps implements a rather strange principle of downloading offline maps of an area - according to a geometric, and not a geographical principle.

Navitel Navigator

Navitel is one of the most popular offline navigation applications for Android.

After installing the apk file, you just need to download the maps to your PC, and then transfer them to your smartphone or tablet in the NavitelContent folder. The application allows you to use highly detailed maps, voice prompts, route calculations and even 3D models of architecture.

However, additional services, such as free map updates or connection to the Navitel.Traffic, Navitel.Friends, Navitel.Weather services will require an Internet connection.

However, this application has one very significant drawback - it only works for free for 7 days, then it will require a very expensive license.

2Gis

DublGis is an interactive directory map that provides the user with the most complete (according to the authors) information about all establishments, companies and objects on the city map.

An updated and expanded version is released at the beginning of each month and is distributed free of charge. Having downloaded 2Gis once, all that remains is to periodically download updates to keep your hand on the pulse of the city.

No less convenient is the function by which you can determine what transport you can use to get to this or that part of the city. To do this, you need to type in the search lines in the “How to get there” section the addresses of the place of departure and destination, or simply put points “A” and “B” directly on the map.

Another fun and very useful feature of 2Gis is the “show where the entrance” service is to a particular building.
