What types of door hinges are there? Types of four-hinged furniture hinges

Currently, there are a wide variety of door hinges. Basic fundamental differences consist in the method of installation, design, material of manufacture and purpose. Today on sale there are both expensive hidden hinges at $200 each, as well as cheap metal analogues. The hinge itself is needed not only to open and close the door, but also to hold it in a level position without distortion.

general information

It is necessary to understand that there are universal and detachable hinges. The main difference between them is that the first ones must be unscrewed when dismantling the door. Detachable hinges do not need to be removed, so you might think that they are more practical, and therefore preferable, but we will figure out whether this is true a little later.

Among other things, doors are classified according to their installation location. They are entrance and interior. It is logical that hinges for entrance doors are more durable and reliable. This is due to the fact that the entrance panel has a lot of weight, while the interior panel is usually light. However, door hinges may not be structurally different. But there is a difference between them. Sometimes it makes sense to use input loops for interior doors. This is done to increase the reliability of the design.

Hinges for interior doors

If we are talking about canvases that open in both directions, then you should definitely give preference to bar hinges. Structurally, they consist of several prefabricated parts, each of which is attached in a special way. It is advisable to carry out installation with at least some experience. This is due to the fact that such loops are not the cheapest.

The most interesting hinges for interior doors are hidden. It is quite difficult to install them yourself, due to their unusual design. When the door is closed, they unfold, and when opened, they fold so that they are practically invisible. Of course, these are one of the most expensive door hinges, so it is better to entrust installation to professionals. Such products are distinguished by their special quality and durability.

If the door opens in one direction, then it is not at all necessary to purchase expensive products. We will talk below about which loops are suitable in most cases.

Overhead canopies and mortise hinges

Well, now - about the simplest and most popular. Overhead awnings have been around for a very long time. Their design consists of only three elements - two plates and a pin. One of the plates, the one that is attached to the door leaf, is made elongated. The second, mounted on the door frame, has small dimensions. The key feature of overhead awnings is that they are very visible when the door is closed. This is due to the fact that such loops are simply applied and secured with self-tapping screws. Installation of the described canopies does not imply preliminary drawing of dimensions, cutting of grooves, etc., so installation can be done by yourself.

Mortise hinges are considered truly classic. It is these canopies that are usually divided into universal and removable. Any of the types is practically invisible when behind closed doors. When purchasing, it is important to consider that mortise hinges come in right and left. Therefore, first think about which direction the canvas will open. Only after this should the hinges be installed on the door. This will help avoid problems with its operation.

Hidden hinges for doors and everything about them

Hidden awnings have been developed relatively recently. Their design is quite complex; it represents a collectively working mechanism. The point is that when closed we only see the door. The canopy has three rotary axes. The central one is movable, and the other two are rotary and fixed. This makes the awnings universal, so the canvas can open in both directions. But it is worth noting that it is almost impossible to install hidden hinges for doors that are small in thickness. This is due to the fact that the creation of niches is required. They can disrupt the rigidity of the structure.

As for the price, it is quite high. These are very expensive hinges, usually starting at $50. It is worth noting that they rarely break, especially if they are branded. However, it hardly makes sense to install such awnings just because they are universal. If the installation of such loops helps to implement any design solution, then they make sense.

Screw-in hinges

The design of such loops is quite simple. The device consists of a single mechanism, which, in turn, is divided into two parts. Each of them has pins that are screwed into the door leaf and into the frame. The result is a complete connection. It is worth noting that the number of pins may vary depending on the maximum load. Currently, two-, three- and four-pin loops are available. The first option is ideal for light interior doors, and the latter - for heavy entrance doors.

These are excellent quality and relatively inexpensive hinges. In addition, during installation it becomes possible to adjust in three directions: height, horizontal and pressure surface. This allows you to install the door leaf into the frame as accurately as possible, and reliable mechanism will make the structure durable.

Marking and installation

Before going directly to installation work, it is necessary to make markings on the door leaf. Moreover, it does not matter whether the front or rear door hinge will be installed. Marking is required. To do this, from the end of the canvas, 20 cm are laid at the top and bottom. From here the marking will be done. It is worth drawing your attention to the fact that before doing this, it is advisable to decide in which direction the door will open. During the marking process, the hinges are applied to the door so that the hinges face the front of the door.

Professionals use two marking methods. The first is the simplest and most popular, but less accurate. It consists in applying the hinge to the door, and marks are made along its contour using a pencil. The second method is more labor-intensive. Its essence is that the loop is temporarily attached to two screws. Then cuts are made along the contour, after which, using a chisel, grooves are cut along the contour to the depth of installation of the hinge. This method ensures maximum accuracy. In this case, the rear door hinges take a little longer to install.

Installing screw-in hinges

We have already figured out a little about the design and features of this type of loop. But it is worth noting that for smooth rotation and exact alignment of the two halves of the part, it is necessary to carry out the installation correctly. All stages of work, from marking to installation, must be carried out responsibly and efficiently. This is exactly the case when it is advisable to use a more labor-intensive installation method that provides maximum accuracy. The main mistake of many is that they are often exceeded permissible loads. This may not appear immediately, but over time, a distortion that is already noticeable to the eye is observed. The installation of hinges on the door should be carried out by specialists, but if you decide to do it yourself, then just be very careful, then everything will work out.

What is suitable for the front door?

It’s easy to guess that a large door, for example, metal or thick wood, should be installed on strong hinges. In this case, it is hardly advisable to use two- or three-pin products. The best way out in this situation is to purchase invoices hinged hinges. The bottom line is that due to the simplicity of the design, its quality is ensured. Installation is quite simple and quick. One side of the hinge is mounted directly into the door, the other - into the door leaf.

It is worth drawing your attention to the fact that it is extremely undesirable to install non-mortise hinges on entrance doors. This is due to the fact that under heavy load they can become deformed. In addition, any thief will be happy with such a solution, because there is nothing easier than dismantling such a canopy. You can make entry doors with hidden hinges. This, of course, is expensive, but it looks impressive, and, most importantly, the reliability of the design is ensured.

About hinges for glass doors

This option is slightly different from all of the above. The fact is that hinges for glass doors have design differences from classic ones. Firstly, in the standard version the door has an impressive weight - approximately 30-40 kilograms. Secondly, it is not always possible to drill.

Hinges for glass doors are hinged (overhead, hidden). This solution is well suited for accordion-type construction or swinging panels. If the product has an impressive weight, then it is advisable to install a pair of four-hinged hinges. They can withstand high loads without deforming. Carousel loops (pendulum) are popular. Their key feature is that they allow the structure to rotate.

Conclusion

Exists huge variety doors - wooden, glass, metal, etc. For this reason there is big choice loops, ranging from elementary overhead structures to complex hidden ones. It is worth noting that it is not always necessary to use expensive awnings. For example, it is better to install mortise hinges on the front door. They will be durable and reliable. True, it is worth taking a responsible approach to the choice of material. It is desirable that the loop does not rust and has a service life of about 50 years. It will be a little more expensive, but you will not need to check the condition of the product every year. As for repairs, they are carried out only in cases of deformation.

Each of us who has at least once dealt with the installation of doors, their repair or restoration, probably knows what door hinges are. It's safe to say that this is enough important element doors, without which it will sag, warp and cease to perform its main function.

Let's take a closer look at the main types door awnings when these or those are used, what are their design features.

General information

Door hinges- the elementary mechanism by which fastening is carried out door leaf to the frame. Currently, canopies are classified according to installation location, material, and design. Usually knowledge of design differences door hinges not required. Often, awnings come complete with a door. But if you ordered to make a door leaf and, in fact, a frame, then there is a high probability that you will have to choose the awnings yourself. This is where the theoretical experience gained from this article comes in handy. It is necessary to understand that all doors are equipped with two hinges. Although this only applies to those cases where the load on the canopy will not exceed 25 kilograms. Heavier doors require the installation of more massive canopies, usually 2-3 pieces.

External hinges

Overhead canopies, also known as external ones, are rightfully considered the most ancient and popular. They appeared immediately after people mastered such a process as metal forging. Of course, there was no need to talk about any patterns or other subtleties, but such loops coped with their main purpose “excellently.” The first options were large enough, so they held massive doors without any problems. This is currently the cheapest type of awning and is mostly popular in rural areas. However, forged hinges are coming back into trend. This is due not only to the large selection of sizes, but also to the difference in patterns. Modern blacksmiths have done their best, so the variety of forms of such canopies is countless. Their key advantage is ease of installation. It is not necessary to pre-prepare the door frame. It is enough to screw the hinges to the leaf, and you can install the door in the designed position.

Internal hinges

Mortise hinges are, by and large, the same canopies, but with minor design features. That is why they are commonly called card loops. Typically, consumers are offered a huge number of different models, but all the differences lie in the shape of the decorative plug.

Some hinges of this type include bearings in their design. When properly lubricated, the door opens and closes very easily. But you need to understand that the bearing has its own resource and does not tolerate strong blows and prolonged vibration. The cheapest options for door hinges do not have a special zinc (anti-corrosion) coating, so they fail quite quickly. Their key advantage compared to other types of loops is that they are universal. Therefore, you can forget about searching for right or left loops.

Universal door hinge

It would seem that universal loops stand out against the background of any other type. Nevertheless, in some ways they are good, but in some respects they lag behind. Their main advantage is that they are double-sided. Therefore, they can be installed on doors opening both to the right and to the left. However, they are used quite rarely. This is due to the fact that for the most part they are not removable, and installing them on the door block is quite difficult. They need to be adjusted as precisely as possible, and only then can you count on the door looking good.

Often, a universal door hinge is used for mezzanines, cupboards, and swing doors. But even here they are not always used. Strength The advantage of such hinges is that they are made of galvanized steel, so during operation they practically do not wear out and are not subject to corrosive processes.

Overhead detachable hinges

This type of loops is practically no different from the type described above. However, this is the preferred option in many cases. This is due to the collapsible design. This solution allows us to reduce the complexity of installation work.

This is one of the best budget options. Such hinges, like the previous ones, are very reliable and of high quality. However, to dismantle them you will need to remove screws or nails, which is a significant disadvantage. Currently, there are a huge number of standard sizes of detachable hinges. Therefore, if you are planning to install the door leaf yourself, use just such canopies. It is much easier to work with them than with one-piece ones; they are not inferior in reliability and durability.

Briefly about screw-in hinges

Hinges that consist of two parts and have small threaded pins on each are called screw-in hinges. The leaf part of the canopy is screwed into the door leaf, and the frame part is screwed into the door frame. They are often used on doors with overhang, but sometimes they are also used without overhang.

Models of screw-in hinges differ in the number of screw-in pins. For lightweight doors, two- and three-pin options are used. For heavy doors, 4-pin hinges are used with the ability to adjust in 3 planes, which allows you to achieve maximum accuracy during installation. Repairing door hinges of this type is usually limited to replacing the pins. In cases of visible deformation or mechanical damage, it is easier to replace the loop with a new one.

To ensure silent operation, use plastic inserts and metal balls mounted in the body of the sash part of the canopy. In general, installing this type of loops has several undeniable advantages. Firstly, it is reliability, and secondly, the possibility of using decorative caps.

Hidden door hinges

Often the turning part of the canopy or hinge is visible to the naked eye when the door is closed. So, for those who do not want at least some part of the structure to be visible, there are hidden hinges. They have very complex design and therefore are not cheap. The hinges are equipped with three rotary axes, so they are universal. When the doors are closed, such canopies are visible, which is their key advantage. As for the disadvantages, hidden door hinges are very expensive. Usually you will have to pay about $50 for one piece. On a heavy door it is necessary to install about 3 such awnings.

So we figured out what hidden door hinges are. The price for them, as you can see, is very high. It is for this reason that such canopies make sense not to change, but to repair. For the most part, the repair consists of replacing one of the axles, as well as adding fresh grease. In some cases, when several axes are deformed, it makes sense to give the hinges to specialists.

About overhead loops

Relatively recently, overhead loops have appeared on sale. The principle of their design and operation is not much different from the classic ones. mortise canopies. But there are several key features that set these loops apart from other types. Firstly, they do not need to be embedded into the leaf and door frame. This is due design features. When the hinges are closed, the door hinges have a gap between the door leaf and the frame of no more than 3 mm. In this case, the canvas fastening card is included in the box fastening card.

The main disadvantage of such awnings is that they are undesirable for heavy doors. This is due to possible deformations and misalignment. But door hinges have a design that allows installation as quickly and simply as possible. This perfect solution for interior doors that are light in weight. They are usually not repaired, since the price allows for immediate replacement. If you are installing overhead hinges on heavy doors, then do not install less than 3 hinges. The distance between each should be the same, but not less than 30 centimeters.

Conclusion

So we talked about the types of hinges and their repair. No mention was made of popular canopies such as butterflies. It is worth noting that butterfly door hinges are card canopies, the sides of which, when unfolded, resemble the wings of a butterfly, hence the name. By and large, these are the most ordinary overhead loops, which for some reason were divided into two groups. The principle of their operation is exactly the same. The same simple installation and no need for insertion due to overlaying cards on top of each other. In general, butterfly door hinges, like classic overhead hinges, are an excellent solution for interior doors.

In principle, this is all that can be said on this topic. There are a huge number of loops sold on the market. Which one is best for you, decide for yourself, but remember key features each type. We also figured out how to replace door hinges.

Door hinges are a mechanism designed to secure the door leaf in the frame.

Reliable and well-thought-out design of door hinges is a guarantee quality work doors. Traditional door hinges are called card hinges.

The main feature that guides the selection of door hinges

First and main feature the choice of door hinges does not imply their aesthetic properties and quality characteristics, but the method of opening the door. There are two main types of door hinges: right and left.

To correctly determine which hinges are needed, you need to stand in front of the door, its opening should happen “for you”, the door hinges right hand- right, respectively, on the opposite left side - left.

Universal canopies for interior doors

There are universal door hinges; they can be used with doors of almost any type, regardless of the opening method. They have a significant drawback: universal hinges are an inseparable structure, so if you need to bring bulky furniture into the room, they will have to be removed.

Regular standard card hinges look like a detachable design, so removing the door from the hinges is not very difficult. Their main advantage is easy installation.

Butterfly door hinges

There is a new device of universal hinges, the so-called butterfly hinges, one half of which is fixed to the door leaf and looks like the wing of this very butterfly, in the other half there is a cutout that follows the contours of this very wing.

The disadvantage of some models of such hinges is that they may play under the weight of the door, so it is advisable to use cardboard supports to install them.

Displacement of the hinges can occur due to the low coefficient of friction of the metal plate on laminated film. As an option, you can use “Moment” universal glue; a layer of glue relieves the screws that hold weakly in the chipboard, so the glue bears the main load.

Such loops belong to universal type and are attached without insertion, are overhead.

Bearing door hinges

To improve their performance properties, modern door hinges are supplemented with plain bearings, or hidden rolling bearings hidden inside the hinge. The bearing balls are made of hardened steel.

Sliding bearings are characterized by increased strength performance characteristics, and they also help get rid of unpleasant door squeaks. They are not recommended for use on lightweight doors; friction for them will be low, so spontaneous opening may occur.

Alternatively, anti-squeak rings can be used instead of bearings.

To improve the aesthetic qualities, many door hinges are equipped with decorative caps; in addition, they perform a protective function for the mechanism, protecting it and the sliding bearing located at the beginning of the hinge from dust getting inside.

Teardrop door hinges

In addition to standard, now traditional door hinges, teardrop-shaped door hinges have been developed. They have a special shape: the support bearing in their design serves to prevent abrasion of the working surface, improves the operation of the door, is characterized by long-term performance and long periods of time work. For any type of door it is recommended to use three bearings.

Correct and uniform placement of door hinges contributes to long service life and also depends on the weight of the door. For a door leaf weighing up to 25 kg, 2 hinges are sufficient, for a door weighing 25 - 40 kg, 3 hinges are required, for doors up to 60 kg, at least 4 hinges are used.

Features of door hinges depending on the material of manufacture

The material of door hinges is mainly ordinary and stainless steel and brass. Steel hinges are made by stamping, brass - by casting.

Brass is flexible, so when cast you get an elegant, stylish product. In addition, brass hinges have high quality galvanic treatment.

Stainless steel hinges

This type of door hinges is distinguished by the presence of all the properties of conventional steel hinges, such as strength, wear resistance and hardness; such hinges are superior to brass ones in their elegance.

Screw-in or pin door hinges

Door hinges and bolts are an integral part of any door block. Through hinges, the door leaf is connected to the door frame, and the bolt, in turn, makes it difficult to open the doors freely, that is, due to its forward movement, the door leaf is locked.

Types of door hinges

A door hinge is a simple mechanism that secures a door to its frame. Door hinges are classified as follows:

  • Classic or card door hinges are two plates movably connected to each other by a steel rod, the first of which is attached to the door leaf, and the second to the door frame.
  • Double-sided hinges - open both inwards and outwards and, as a rule, are installed in in public places, because such hinges for interior doors, as a rule, are not needed.
  • A butterfly hinge or an overhead hinge without a mortise - this design allows you to avoid cutting openings for hinges either in the door or in the frame.
  • Screw-in hinges - designed for doors with a rebate; to install them, drill two holes for the hinge rods (one smooth, the other screw-shaped). The main rod then closes decorative finishing(hidden loops).

Types of crossbars

Door bolt - special metal object, having a body shape in the form of a rotating rod or resembling a hook. Depending on the design of the lock, there may be several bolts in it. They differ:

  • According to their shape (bars, cylinders), width, length and materials from which they were made.
  • According to the mechanism that sets the crossbar in motion - using a key (for entrance doors) or a door handle (for interior doors).

So, before deciding which door furniture, hinges and crossbars will be purchased, you must first decide on their purpose. For the rest, Leroy Merlin store consultants, who have high professional qualifications and able to answer any customer question.

The superiority of removable canopies over universal ones, analysis of “butterfly” and “invisible” hinges. Distributing the load and explaining why the third loop just ruins everything. Separate mini-review – ideal partners for a massive door.

1. “Let’s decide: heavy doors are how many in kilograms?”

Conditionally: from 50 kg. Anything lighter can be handled by regular mortise hinges with 2.5mm thick cards. But for doors heavier than 50 kg, it is better to buy thicker hinges.

In general, the weight of the canvas depends primarily on: a) the material and method of filling; b) dimensions; V) exterior finishing. So that you understand the average layout:

~ 14 kg – weight of a “cardboard” interior door without glass (800 x 2000 mm, thickness – 35 mm).

~ 17 kg – similar model, but with a wide glass insert from top to bottom.

~ 40 kg deaf weighs interior door made of solid oak (800 x 2000 mm, thickness – 35 mm).

~ 75 kg weighs Entrance door made of solid ash (900 x 2000 mm, thickness – 55 mm).

~ 115 kg – weight of a church oak door (1300 x 2300 mm, thickness – 60 mm).

These figures are valid for bare canvas, and you should always keep in mind the weight of decorative overlays (if any) and, of course, fittings. Alone door handles add 0.5-1 kg on top.

2. “How is the load distributed on the hinges holding a heavy door?”

Let's say we have classic version– double door mortise hinges. Then the lower one bears the main axial load, and the upper one mostly takes the radial load. Simply put, the bottom hinge bears the weight of the sash, while the top hinge is subject to a force that tends to pull the hinge out of the jamb.

Door hinges wear mostly downward. Under the weight of the canvas, their halves are ground against each other, and bearings are gradually developed. As a result, over the course of a year, the interior door in the house drops by about 0.2-0.3 mm. That is, in 5 years it will inevitably sag by 1-1.5 mm. And this even with ideal conditions: adequately selected loops, proper installation etc.

Thus, the correct (taking into account the weight of the door leaf) choice of door hinges will allow you to delay as much as possible creaking, stiff movement, clinging of the door leaf to the frame and other incidents. And vice versa: if you hang a thick oak door on steel hinges 100 x 75 x 25 mm, then expect disaster. The hinges may not break out of the box, but they will suddenly sag.

3. “Why do you suggest buying mortise hinges for a heavy door? There are overhead “butterfly” awnings.”

No groove (groove) is made for butterflies. In fact, the door is held in place by four poor self-tapping screws on the bottom hinge. Butterflies also have a gigantic gap “out of the box”, which will only grow. In this situation, any wooden door in the 50+ kg category is doomed. It will quickly sag and begin to rub against the frame, even if it is hung by 3-4 butterflies.

4. "A door hinges hidden installation(“invisible”)? What's wrong with them?

They have a short hinge mechanism and small area fastenings, which leads to an increase in the load on the screws, and there are two of them on the sash and frame sides. In general, it is already clear that these are not the best hinges for thick doors (as well as for tall, wide, etc.).

Many more invisible ones narrow the opening angle. Sometimes very seriously - from 180° to 100°. You can, of course, move the box forward, as if drowning the platband in it, but this is unlikely to please your master. He already has a lot of work planned, because for hidden hinges the groove is milled not by 2-3 mm, as in the case of mortise hinges, but often by 10-11 mm or more. It would seem okay. But then we remember that we have heavy wooden doors and inside is not soft pine, but something very hard - oak, beech, ash. Such wood can be removed with a milling cutter, but it will not be so quick and easy. By the way, it won't be cheap either.

And since we're talking about money. Decent hidden door hinges (the kind that can withstand a heavy door) cost from RUB 3,000/piece.

5. “So, mortise hinges. But which ones: universal or removable?

Removable. And the point is not that with them you can remove the canvas at any time without unscrewing the screws. They have another not obvious, but extremely important advantage - simplicity. Removable hinges have only two rubbing surfaces and one support point (in the form of a hardened ball at the end).

Due to the simplicity of the design, removable hinges have less play and are not so sensitive to workmanship. Basically, if the ball rests against the cap, the hinges should and will work fine. Even if otherwise they have minor and moderate flaws in geometry.

With universal canopies on 4-5-6 bearings everything is complicated. To ensure that the bearings are evenly loaded, precision casting is required. It is unrealistic to achieve this in the cheap segment: door hinges for heavy doors costing 150-200 rubles are not cast, but stamped, and the axial play in them can reach 1-1.5 mm. This is already enough so that even with a perfect insertion, only one bearing plays the lead, and the rest just play along. In turn, this forces wear on the first bearing. After it is worn out, the blade will sag to the position of the next one, which from that moment will begin to work towards accelerated wear.

By the way, the removable loop has another advantage. If it sags, you can compensate for the change in height by ordering a brass or bronze washer from a turner and placing it on the axle. Universal awnings are not removable - and such a trick will not work there.

6. “How many hinges do you need for a heavy door - two or three?”

By two, except in special cases (more on this at the end of the paragraph). In this case, they should be fastened with a distance of 200 mm from the top and bottom of the canvas.

Why exactly two loops? First of all, three is almost always overkill. For example, you can order Palladium N 700 door hinges from us, which together can handle a 90-kilogram leaf. And 90 kg is a lot: 99% of home doors made of wood will fit into this limit.

Secondly, the third loop is needed for pressing. Its participation in load distribution is negligible, if not zero at all.

Thirdly, it is incredibly difficult to embed three hinges, aligning them along the same axis. Even if it works out, no one has canceled the seasonal fluctuations of wood, and the door will inevitably move. Because of this, the carefully set alignment will move, the load on the canopies and fasteners will become variable. Simply put, the porch will be broken, one of the hinges will begin to creak. Moreover, it is impossible to predict which one.

It makes sense to add a third loop in two cases:

Weak and thin door frame(≤ 20 mm in thickness);

High blade (≥ 2200 mm).

7. “I want to buy hinges for heavy wooden door, which will last at least 20-30 years. No creaking, jerky movement, sagging, etc. What to look for?

1.[Sideliness] This is if you listened to our recommendation and opted for removable models. How to distinguish a right loop from a left one.

2.[Size] If the door is heavy (70+ kg), take higher and thicker awnings. For example, our brass hinges Palladium N 700-5″ (125 x 80 x 4 mm) - they are designed for weights up to 100 kg. If the door is moderately heavy (60-70 kg), 100 x 80 x 4 mm will do. TO interior paintings weighing 40-45 kg you can limit yourself to loops 100 (125) x 75 x 2.5 mm.

3.[Material] Steel is in best case scenario B with a minus in geometry. Brass hinges tend to be much more accurate because they are not stamped but rather cast.
