How to find out which wallpaper is vinyl or non-woven. What is the difference between non-woven wallpaper and vinyl wallpaper?

When planning a home renovation, the question arises: which wallpaper is better - vinyl or non-woven?

Today in the store you can find a huge selection of wallpapers that differ not only in appearance, but also in characteristics.

Of course, if you choose between paper coverings and non-woven ones, then it’s clear that the second option is better, but here’s how they differ vinyl wallpapers from non-woven ones, let's try to figure it out.

First you need to familiarize yourself with the characteristics of each coating, after which you can draw conclusions.

Non-woven coverings and their advantages

What is the difference between non-woven wallpaper and vinyl? The non-woven covering is universal, because it contains: natural fibers cellulose and polymeric substances for binding.

This combination makes this type of finishing coating in demand due to some advantages.

Let's take a closer look positive traits non-woven wallpaper:

  • high coating density;
  • good structure (does not spread out after applying glue);
  • environmentally friendly material;
  • high vapor permeability, allowing the walls to “breathe”;
  • fire safety - such material does not ignite easily;
  • heat and sound insulation;
  • availability of wallpaper options for painting;
  • cost-effectiveness of the material.

Economical of this coverage lies in the gluing method, because during the work the glue is applied only to the walls, and the material remains dry, which allows reducing glue consumption.

The versatility of non-woven fabrics lies in the fact that they can be used to cover any surface, regardless of whether it is concrete or wood, drywall or ordinary plaster.

The density of the non-woven fabric allows you to hide small wall defects, small cracks and irregularities. The environmental composition allows the coating to be used in a bedroom or children's room.

If we consider non-woven fabrics for painting, then here too you can find positive qualities.

Firstly, the velvety surface does not need to be painted, especially since there are materials on sale that have already been painted by the manufacturer.

Secondly, non-woven covering has several varieties:

  • colorless with a smooth surface, which are used exclusively for restoration work;
  • with a three-dimensional pattern or painted in production;
  • with a relief structure, which allows you to hide wall errors.

Painting non-woven coverings increases service life, but each time it reduces vapor permeability.

To paint such wallpaper, you can use acrylic emulsion, latex or water-based paints.

Even despite the quality of the non-woven fabrics, the surface of the wall or ceiling must be puttied - this will help reduce glue consumption, making the base uniform (preventing the appearance of foreign stains).

Non-woven wallpaper can be distinguished from others due to the presence of several layers and high density.

The principle of gluing walls with non-woven covering

Before gluing non-woven wallpaper, the walls must be puttied. Considering the density of the coating, it will be enough to apply one layer of putty.

After the walls have been puttied and cleaned, the surface should be treated with a deep penetration primer. When all preparatory work done, you can start gluing wallpaper.

To paste walls with non-woven coverings, you must use a special glue that is designed specifically for this type of fabric.

This is done so that the material does not fall off at the end of the work, because non-woven coverings are heavy, and special glue will hold them well.

It should be remembered that wallpaper glue is applied only to the wall. This operating technology has a number of advantages: it helps reduce the weight of the canvas, saves wallpaper glue, and you don’t have to free up half the room to apply a strip of wallpaper.

After the coating has dried completely, you can begin painting the walls, if necessary.

Although non-woven wallpaper can be painted many times, it should be remembered that dark color It is unlikely that it will be possible to repaint it lighter, which means that each layer should be a shade darker.

Considering the density of the coating and good moisture resistance, non-woven fabrics can be glued even in the kitchen, because such a fabric can be wiped with a damp cloth or sponge.

Behind soft coating Canvas with a factory pattern should be cared for carefully, preferably with a vacuum cleaner or dry cloth.

When heavy pollution It is better to repaint the canvas than to get rid of the stain by wiping.

As you can see, the principle of covering walls with non-woven wallpaper is simple, which means that even a person who has no experience in repair work can perform such work.

Characteristics of vinyl wallpaper

The difference between vinyl wallpaper and non-woven wallpaper is that they come in different textures and different types.

So, we can highlight the following varieties vinyl covering:

  • silk-screen printing - obtained by hot embossing polyvinyl chloride and silk threads;
  • sheets with foamed vinyl;
  • washable coatings;
  • hard vinyl coated sheets.

Such a variety of materials allows them to be used in almost any room, because thanks to large selection Colors and patterns of wallpaper will easily fit into any interior.

Using foam vinyl covering, you can give the wallpaper the look of fabric or paper, imitate decorative plaster or natural stone.

Vinyl has good density, which allows the use of canvases in rooms where wet cleaning is often carried out, and this material is also less susceptible to mechanical damage.

To understand how to distinguish vinyl wallpaper from others, it is necessary to consider the structure of vinyl coatings.

As a rule, such material belongs to the duplex type, because it has one relief layer, which consists of polyvinyl chloride, and is intended for decoration, and the bottom layer is made smooth in order to stick to the surface.

Several types of glue are used to cover walls with vinyl sheets. In this situation, you can use glue for the paper base or purchase universal glue.

As for the process of pasting the walls itself, it may differ depending on the wallpaper base. After all, vinyl covering can be either paper-based or non-woven.

If the base of the canvas is paper, then the glue must be applied both to the wall and to the canvas itself, and if the base is non-woven, then the glue is applied only to the wall.

Regardless of whether vinyl or non-woven wallpaper will be glued, the surface of the wall should always be puttied and treated with a primer.

The technology for gluing walls, be it non-woven or vinyl wallpaper, is similar, and given that there are vinyl wallpapers based on non-woven material, one person can also handle this without the help of professionals.

It turns out that it is better to choose non-woven fabrics, because then there is no need to prepare additional space for rolling out the roll and the glue consumption will be much less.

Let's sum it up

When asked which wallpaper is better - vinyl or non-woven wallpaper, you can answer that both types of wallpaper are good in their own way, because the quality and installation process are similar, but there is still a slight difference.

So, if you need to choose wallpaper for painting, it is better to use plain wallpaper made of non-woven material, and in rooms where children or pets live, it is better to glue vinyl sheets.

If you can’t decide what to choose, then you can purchase combined wallpaper. This type wallpaper combines all the best from each category.

Thus, the combined coating can be painted, while treating it with a damp cloth and detergents.

We cannot display this gallery To choose the right wallpaper, you need to take into account its characteristics and the decor of the room in which the material will be pasted.

For the kitchen, it is better to choose vinyl ones, although non-woven fabric for painting is also suitable. The main thing is that the coating composition is harmless to health.

Among the wide variety of finishing materials, the main thing is to choose the right one quality type coatings so that you don’t have to blame yourself later after an unsuccessful repair.

So, when choosing a material, do not rush, think carefully about each option, study the characteristics of the canvas you like, and only then make a purchase.

It is necessary to understand that the quality of the material will determine after what period of time the need for new repairs arises - one year or all five years.

Wallpaper selection plays important role when creating the image of the room you like and maintaining its functionality. Miscellaneous purposes rooms in the house determine the requirements for wall coverings and create their own microclimate, suitable for some materials and destructive for others.

In addition to traditional paper wallpaper, their non-woven and vinyl varieties. They are used on an equal basis with each other in the domestic sphere, but are strikingly different in functionality.

The main parameters used when comparing wall coverings include:

  1. moisture resistance;
  2. vapor permeability;
  3. strength and wear resistance;
  4. durability;
  5. toxicity;
  6. ease of gluing;
  7. suitability for further processing.

Let's take a closer look at the differences between non-woven and vinyl coverings.

1. Moisture resistance

Non-woven wallpaper is non-woven material, which is based on cellulose fibers. To keep them in bound state, use polymer adhesives. Due to the high hygroscopicity of cellulose, such wallpaper absorbs moisture quite strongly. This localizes their use in rooms with dry air and no sources of moisture - bedrooms, halls, living rooms. Near a sink or shower stall, non-woven fabric quickly becomes unusable.

Vinyl wallpaper is produced in the form of a moisture-proof polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheet connected to a paper or non-woven backing. Vinyl – resistant material, which can be washed not only clean water, but also soap solutions. Only abrasive cleaning agents that mechanically damage the polymer surface are incompatible with it. Vinyl wallpaper is the second most popular material for finishing kitchens, bathrooms and bathrooms (after tiles).

2. Vapor permeability

Despite the apparent solidity of concrete, up to 1/3 of the water vapor leaves the room through the walls. Thanks to the removal of vapors, there is no accumulation of moisture and “stagnation” of air in the room. If the room is set up good system ventilation, the requirement of vapor permeability loses relevance. To ensure a favorable microclimate in the room with natural circulation air, wall coverings must allow moisture to pass through.

Video: Vinyl wallpaper

Non-woven wallpaper has the greatest vapor permeability. This is facilitated by the specific structure of the glued fibers, which is spacious enough for the passage of water molecules. Ordinary vinyl wallpaper practically does not allow moisture to pass through, but collects it in the form of condensation on its surface.

There is a special foamed type of vinyl that has good vapor permeability. Its disadvantages include reduced water resistance, which prevents widespread use in kitchens, bathrooms and toilets.

3. Strength and wear resistance

Due to the high mechanical properties of polyvinyl chloride, wallpaper made from it is often pasted in corridors and hallways. The most durable coatings are made from thick vinyl. They are difficult to damage even with long sliding contacts with metal fittings clothes.

Non-woven wallpaper is less resistant to abrasion and has less tensile strength (it is damaged more quickly during gluing). In case of wet contact with clothing upper layer Such wallpaper quickly becomes unusable. Before carrying out renovations in the apartment, you should determine in advance the places where it is undesirable to glue non-woven wallpaper due to frequent and wet friction (wardrobe, hallway).

4. Durability

The service life of both coatings is comparable, although slight differences are still present. Manufacturers of non-woven wallpaper guarantee their flawless operation for 8-10 years (provided they are protected from moisture and mechanical damage). Vinyl wallpaper lasts a little longer - 10-12 years.

A fundamental difference in service life is observed when operating conditions change - the level of humidity or the intensity of external influences. In the presence of external factors wear, vinyl wallpaper lasts longer and looks brighter than non-woven wallpaper, which fades faster and loses its initial attractiveness.

5. Toxicity

It should be noted that there are no universal or cheap methods for determining the toxicity of finishing materials. Examination environmental safety wallpaper, carried out in specialized laboratories, is available only at the level large manufacturers due to the high cost and specificity of the equipment used.

From a statistical point of view, the likelihood of purchasing non-woven wallpaper that releases toxic substances after gluing is much less than similar vinyl wallpaper. The non-woven fabric contains only glue as an extraneous “chemical”, which is practically not capable of becoming a source of harmful substances after application to the wall.

Video: Non-woven wallpaper

IN PVC production a number of toxic components are used, traces of which may remain in the final product - formaldehyde, vinyl chloride, etc. Paints that are applied to the vinyl surface at the factory and do not fade in the sun also sometimes have low environmental qualities.

Almost all budget versions of vinyl wallpaper have bad smell. More expensive branded materials differ in better side in terms of organoleptic indicators, but they are significantly more expensive.

6. Easy to stick

Applying non-woven wallpaper to a wall is much less labor-intensive than vinyl wallpaper. This is caused by the following factors:

  1. a lower specific density of non-woven fabric (g/m2) leads to a decrease in the mass of the glued fabric;
  2. Glue is applied only to the wall. The strip of wallpaper remains dry, which facilitates the process of joining it with adjacent canvases;
  3. there is no need to hide defects and surface unevenness (the gluing procedure is simplified). Wall defects that require plastering when using vinyl wallpaper become less noticeable under the relief structure of cellulose fibers;
  4. accelerated gluing of walls caused by the larger width of non-woven wallpaper compared to standard rolls (1 m versus 0.5 m).

7. Possibility of further processing

Vinyl wallpapers are usually presented bright colors and patterns that are resistant to action sunlight. The catalog of offered designs is extensive, but does not always satisfy the sophisticated requirements of the buyer. Painting vinyl wallpaper is possible, but is limited by the requirements of a textured and plain light-colored surface. Bright wallpaper It is not always possible to paint successfully due to the high intensity of the initial color.

Non-woven wallpaper is suitable for repeated repainting. The lack of a smooth surface makes it easier to hold a thick layer of paint that can completely cover the original shade. Many non-woven coverings, specially produced in a form intended for painting, are easily recognized by their monochromatic and repeating patterns. The color of the cellulose coating can be changed throughout the entire period of use. This allows you to completely transform the room without re-pasting the walls.

The presented types of wallpaper are not universal. When choosing them, you should focus on the parameters and purpose of the room. Vinyl wallpaper is suitable for creating washable and wear-resistant surfaces. Non-woven coverings are optimal for gluing bedrooms and living rooms, as well as creating your own extravagant designs.

Paradox: the larger the assortment, the more difficult it is to make a choice. Just 20-30 years ago, only paper wallpaper was presented on the finishing materials market. Now progress has provided a much larger selection of materials from which wallpaper is made.

People often don’t really know how wallpapers differ from each other, except for color and design. Let's figure it out.

Vinyl wallpapers

Double-layer vinyl wallpaper. The first layer is fabric or paper. The second is made of synthetic material - polyvinyl chloride. In other words, it is called PVC, vinyl, winnol, corvik, lukovil, etc. Simply put, polyvinyl chloride is plastic. Linoleum is made from this material, furniture edge and even clothes. By the way, gramophone records are also made of polyvinyl chloride.

This material is both a plus and a minus of vinyl wallpaper.

Dignity. Polyvinyl chloride “does not burn in fire and does not sink in water.” Therefore, vinyl wallpapers are waterproof and can even be wiped with a brush and cleaning agents. They don't burn. They are not afraid of exposure to light and direct sun rays, water and scratches (other mechanical damage).

Vinyl wallpaper impregnate special composition, which prevents the formation of fungi and mold. This wallpaper is good for bathrooms and kitchens where there is high humidity.

Flaw. It's synthetic artificial material, so it does not allow air to pass through. Polyvinyl chloride releases harmful substances eg formaldehyde. Vinyl wallpaper is good for the kitchen and even the bathroom, but it is not advisable to glue it in the living room, bedroom, and especially in the nursery.

There are vinyl wallpapers with micropores for better breathability, but they also do not allow us to talk about the environmental friendliness of the material.

Interesting. The first vinyl wallpaper appeared in 1947 (manufactured by the United Wallpaper company).

Vinyl wallpaper has a wide variety of design solutions. They can imitate tiles, wood, leather, fabric. They even produce special ones.

Vinyl wallpapers are:

  1. Foamed. Embossed, thick wallpaper. Due to their heterogeneous structure, they mask wall defects well. But not very moisture resistant. It is better to glue in non-residential premises.
  2. . Suitable for treating walls in the bathroom and kitchen.
  3. Silkscreen printing. The second wallpaper layer contains silk threads. Pearlescent, silky to the touch, does not fade for a long time. Much more expensive than other vinyl wallpapers.

The service life of vinyl wallpaper is up to 10 years.

How to glue vinyl wallpaper?

The glue is applied to the wallpaper, left for three to five minutes, and then the wallpaper is applied to the wall. There is no need to overexpose, otherwise the paper base will deteriorate. For vinyl wallpaper, a special adhesive for heavy wallpaper is suitable.

At least two people are needed to hang vinyl wallpaper. If you have no experience with this finishing material, it is better to hire professionals.

Non-woven wallpaper

Unlike two-layer vinyl, non-woven wallpaper is uniform, made from natural material – fibrous cellulose. Therefore, they allow the walls to “breathe” - the air in the room will not be “stagnant”.

By the way, some items of clothing are trimmed with non-woven fabric. The edges of blouses, suits, some outerwear. This is done to ensure that the product keeps its shape. The same property is valued in non-woven wallpaper.

Non-woven wallpaper perfectly disguises wall unevenness, microcracks, there will be no need to plaster and level the surface before installation.

The design variety is not as great as vinyl ones. Most often they are smooth and plain, although there are also reliefs, patterns, and embossing.

Significant pluses of wallpaper from of this material: at next renovation You don’t have to tear off the wallpaper, but apply the next wallpaper layer to the old non-woven wallpaper.

Any non-woven wallpaper can be painted. Even if they don’t have a special mark about it. Paint will only strengthen the structure of the wallpaper.

But the disadvantages can be determined by their cost. Non-woven wallpapers are an order of magnitude more expensive than vinyl ones.

Another disadvantage is instability to mechanical damage. Non-woven wallpaper will be easy prey for pets and children.

The service life of non-woven wallpaper is the same as that of vinyl - up to 10 years.

How to glue non-woven wallpaper?

Non-woven wallpaper is easy to use. The glue is applied directly to the wall. The wallpaper is glued end to end. Choose a special glue for heavy wallpaper.

Non-woven wallpaper is denser and more uniform, so it does not tear or stretch like vinyl.

Wallpaper does not shrink after pasting. This is an important fact for the happy owners of an apartment in a new building. Because the walls of new buildings can shrink over time.

Even a beginner can handle gluing non-woven wallpaper. So if you do not have experience in such work, choose non-woven wallpaper.

Vinyl wallpaper on non-woven backing

Not so long ago, manufacturers combined the advantages of two types of wallpaper - and released vinyl coating.

What is the advantage of mixed type?

  • Can be wetted or washed using cleaning products.
  • Convenient to glue. The technology is the same as with non-woven wallpaper.
  • You can paint up to five layers of paint. Wallpaper will mask the roughness and defects of the wall, so there is no need to first level, plaster or putty the wall. Choose acrylic or water-dispersion paint.
  • The vinyl layer does not absorb dust, unlike, for example, paper wallpaper. This is relevant for asthmatics, allergy sufferers and all people who care about their health.

Unfortunately, the breathability of such wallpaper is low due to the vinyl layer.

Decorative decoration of walls and ceilings with wallpaper remains at the peak of its popularity. Selection of non-woven and vinyl wallpaper (photo)

To choose which is better, non-woven or vinyl wallpaper, you should learn more about them. For example, what they are made of, their characteristics and qualities, their features and types, their pros and cons. After all, I really want them to last longer and be safe.

Vinyl wallpaper is made of two layers:

  • The main one with which we glue them to the surface. It can be paper or non-woven.
  • Upper, or outer, on which a pattern or embossed decoration is applied. Made from polyvinyl chloride and resistant to damage and dirt.

Vinyl wallpapers differ not only in their colors, but also in the materials from which they are made and the technology used to create them.

Types of vinyl wallpaper

The variety of textures of vinyl wallpaper is very diverse; they are divided into several groups:

  • Structural– created from foam vinyl, the patterns on them are made by cold stamping. They have a dense, varied texture, due to which they well hide the unevenness of the surface on which they are glued. These wallpapers are thick and voluminous, but very light. They are easy to use and do not require additional preparation of the walls before gluing.

  • Compact– made from foam vinyl using hot stamping. Such wallpaper is used to replace other materials, such as stone or brick. They withstand all mechanical stress, are easy to handle and quite unpretentious.

  • Heavy vinyl- made using hot stamping. They are very dense and quite heavy. Such wallpaper will easily hide small cracks or chips in the wall. Their advantages are high moisture resistance and breathability. They can imitate leather, fabrics and even Venetian plaster.

  • – when creating them, a special reagent (inhibitor) is used not over the entire surface, which the foaming vinyl suppresses. Further, due to the heating of the canvas, pieces of vinyl untreated with the inhibitor become voluminous, which is how a three-dimensional pattern is obtained. Such wallpapers are resistant to ultraviolet radiation and mechanical stress, but their price is quite high.

  • Flat vinyl or silkscreen– consists of two layers, the main one is paper or non-woven, the decorative one consists of a continuous layer of vinyl with silk threads. Due to this, the wallpaper resembles fabric. They can be either smooth or textured. They can also imitate textured plaster or skin.

  • Washable wallpaper or polyfiln- on paper base They apply several different layers of vinyl, different pigments, stabilizers and additives so that they can be easily washed. This wallpaper is well suited for the kitchen and bathroom.

Important! When choosing vinyl wallpaper of any kind, you need to know that they do not allow air to pass through.

Non-woven wallpaper

Non-woven wallpaper, like all others, has a variety of colors and textures. They are based on cellulose impregnated binders and a small piece of paper. Outwardly, they look like paper, and if you touch them, they resemble fabric.

Types of non-woven wallpaper

Non-woven wallpaper has much less variety than any other.

They are divided into:

  • Non-woven - the same ones made from cellulose. They can be smooth or corrugated, with patterns or imitating decorative plaster. Most often they are used for painting, since the variety of patterns is much less than that of other types of wallpaper. Non-woven wallpaper can be repainted several times and this will not disturb its ornamentation.
  • Non-woven wallpaper - consists of two layers, upper non-woven and lower main, consisting of paper, textiles or vinyl. The decorative interlining layer is responsible for the ability to pass air.

Non-woven or non-woven wallpaper is breathable and tolerant of mechanical impact and wet cleaning. They are dense, easy to glue with your own hands, durable and environmentally friendly.

Advice! When painting non-woven or non-woven wallpaper, use water-based paints.

Differences between vinyl and non-woven wallpaper

We learned what non-woven and vinyl wallpapers are. Home distinctive feature theirs is breathability and range. When choosing for yourself what is better, vinyl or non-woven wallpaper, consider where they will be located.

Vinyl washable wallpaper is more suitable for the kitchen, hallway and bathroom, as these rooms require frequent wet cleaning. In the bedroom and nursery, it is better to glue non-woven wallpaper because of its good breathability and environmental friendliness.

Non-woven and vinyl wallpapers and their difference in the method of gluing also often become an argument when choosing, since in the case of heavy vinyl this process is much longer, since the glue is applied directly to the back of the canvas, after which it must be allowed to absorb for 3- 7 minutes. As a result, this is reflected in the time of work.

As for non-woven fabric, the situation here is somewhat simpler, since the glue is applied directly to the wall and there is no need to wait until it begins to dry. Accordingly, gluing non-woven wallpaper can be done without removing all the furniture from the room; it is enough to simply organize free access to the wall.

In this article we will not dwell in detail on the technology of wallpapering walls, so we will simply present a video that shows detailed instructions and some useful tips are given.

Important! Each wallpaper has its own type of glue, and you should buy it, since vinyl and non-woven fabric have different weights, and therefore the strength of the glue is different.

As can be seen from everything said above, it is very difficult to answer the question whether non-woven or vinyl wallpaper is better. It all depends on many factors and personal preferences, but if, for example, there are children and pets in the house, then it is better to opt for durable vinyl, which will firmly repel all attacks on its surface.

But in the bedroom or living room, natural non-woven lining will add comfort and warmth, especially since the impact on the walls in these rooms is much less than in the hallway or nursery.
