How to drill a well

Let's analyze this process from a theoretical point of view:

What to drill with

Drilling is carried out using the following drill heads:

  • For drilling in clay soils, a spiral-shaped drill with a base of 45-85 mm and a blade 258-290 mm long is used.

Washing out rock or soil from a well is carried out with a special drilling fluid fed into the pipe in one of two ways:

  • By pumping a pump into the drill pipe and then releasing the solution by gravity with the rock out through the annulus - direct flushing.
  • By entering the annulus by gravity, and then pumping a solution with rock out of the drill pipe with a pump - backwashing.

The disadvantage of this technology is that it involves sophisticated equipment, which greatly increases the cost of work. With direct flushing, the construction of a well is cheaper, so owners of private houses most often order it for the construction of a structure on their site.

What is the percussion-rope drilling method?

The oldest, most labor-intensive and very slow drilling method is the percussion-rope drilling method (see). But with its help you can get a high-quality well that is ready to last up to half a century.

The technology is as follows:

  • Rock or soil is broken by the action of a heavy projectile, which rises to a certain height and then falls down with force.
  • Using a bailer, the destroyed rock is removed from the borehole.

The advantage of the drilling method is that there is no need to use water or a special drilling fluid during operation, which allows you to more accurately penetrate the aquifer, and thereby ensure the maximum flow rate of the well and increase its service life.

The disadvantages of the method include:

  • Great labor intensity.
  • High cost of drilling.
  • To reach the second and subsequent aquifers, isolation of the aquifers located above is required. For this, additional casing strings are used, which increases the cost of purchasing pipes of a different larger diameter.
  • The volume of work that specialists must perform is also increasing.

Shaking is the process of cleaning a well from dirt. It requires the use of a powerful centrifugal pump. It is also possible to use, but this type pump will prolong the process time.

Drilling work: stages

1. First you need to dig a hole or pit, the dimensions of which are 150 by 150 cm. To prevent the recess from crumbling, its walls are lined with plywood, boards, and pieces of chipboard. Another option is to dig a trunk with a diameter of 15-20 cm and a depth of 1 m with an ordinary drill. This is done so that the pipe is more stable in a vertical position.

It is much more convenient for two people to do this: the first one turns the gas wrench, and the second one hits the bar from above, breaking through the rock. Using a winch simplifies the process: it makes lifting and lowering equipment into the well much easier. The rod is marked during drilling. Markings will be required for orientation. 3. To make it easier to overcome different layers of soil, special drills are used.

To strengthen the pipe, the space behind it is filled with 5-mm crushed stone or coarse sand. The backfill must be above the filter level. The filter is the most important element of any well. The main function of the filter is protection from sand and large impurities. In parallel with backfilling, water is pumped into a pipe with a sealed upper end. This manipulation helps to flush the annulus and filter. After washing, a natural barrier is formed for large impurities. Bailout of a well with a bailer attachment or auger pump means that water is pumped out of a fresh well until the water becomes clean and clear. This stage is called buildup. An electric centrifugal pump is most often used for it. The advantage of this mechanism is that it can pump high-density liquid media.   1. well flow rate, indicators of its depth;
  2. casing diameter;
  3. distance of the well from the house.

The required pump power directly depends on these parameters. For shallow depths (up to 9 m), a self-priming surface pump, in other cases a submersible well pump will do a good job.

After the pump is immersed, a pipe is brought out into the wellhead, equipped with a caisson, welded to its head. A valve is installed on it, which will open the way for water to the top and regulate the flow. If the water intake rate is excessive, the low-productivity well will quickly dry up, and the pump, running idle, will fail.
