Custom kitchen design. Interior of a small kitchen (51 photos) - non-standard solutions for standard layouts

This situation most often arises if an apartment is being redeveloped and part of the living room is added to the kitchen. As a result, the latter turns into a kitchen-dining room.

The second reason for looking for ideas for a kitchen of a non-standard shape may be living in a private house, which was once planned in a rather ridiculous way. A variation of the same case is the combination of a small kitchen (in a private house) with an equally small adjacent room.

It would seem: you have enough square meters at your disposal, but many only dream of a kitchen with an area of 15-20 sq.m. But when it comes to arranging furniture, it turns out that fitting it in is not so easy.

And if there are some other inconveniences (for example, with the location of windows and doors, or the width of the kitchen), the problem often resembles a Rubik’s cube (remember this one? - twist it or not, but the correct location just doesn’t want to fold).

To help those of our readers who have a kitchen of a non-standard (=irregular, non-rectangular) shape with its solution, we have selected 5 different examples (kitchens ranging from 14 to 22 sq.m.), where effective techniques were used. They allow you to rationally use the available space, and at the same time make the kitchen original. In any case, your closest friends will most likely not have such a furniture arrangement.

In each example you will see plan, 5-6 photos of different angles of the kitchen + our brief comments on the layout.

And again, as in similar guides, we draw your attention to 2 points:

  • the main thing is the shape of the room, and if your area is a little smaller (or larger), just remove (or add) 1-2 unimportant (or unnecessary to you personally) elements;
  • The color palette of kitchen furniture shown in the examples serves only as one of the options (to illustrate the layout) and in no case can be considered the only possible one; what is much more important is how the furniture is located relative to the walls and each other.

Who knows, maybe there are amazing hidden reserves in the unconventional shape of your kitchen? Let our guide tell you where to find them!

kitchen No. 1 (14 sq.m.):

1 - sink area, 2 - stove area, 3 - dining table area.

The main inconvenience: there is not a single blank wall that is spacious enough. A large window is very convenient in terms of natural light, but the standard arrangement of furniture is difficult to apply here.

How the designers coped with this task, you will see in the photographs, checking the plan. Also note: the wall leading from the work area to the table is not wasted. A narrow tabletop shelf is attached to it, which can serve as an additional work area (if guests come) or act as a bar counter.

kitchen No. 2 (16 sq.m.):

1 - storage systems (non-perishable food and dishes), 2 - kitchen peninsula with stove, 3 - washing area, 4 - dining table.

The main inconvenience: many doors opening into the kitchen-dining room and not a single (!) window. The most optimal solution for the designers seemed to be the “kitchen peninsula” technique (the “island” itself would not fit here) + light furniture finishing with partial glass inserts on the cabinet fronts. At the same time, the doors no longer interfere, and in each zone there is enough space not only for work, but also for movement.

__________________________

kitchen No. 3 (20 sq.m.):

1- storage systems, 2- kitchen island, 3- sink area, 4- dining table.

A more pleasant situation compared to the previous one, although, you see, it is much easier to plan a rectangle in plan. There are fewer doors, and there is a window (and a rather large one). And one more undoubted advantage of this kitchen: there are enough long blank walls where it is logical to place the cabinets.

All this made it possible to place a full-fledged kitchen island, spacious storage systems and even, albeit not very large, but still a separate dining table, and in a quite comfortable place.

kitchen No. 4 (21 sq.m.):

1 - work area (on the left - stove, on the right - sink), 2 - storage systems and refrigerator, 3 - bar counter

This or a similar version of the kitchen can be achieved by those who connect two small rooms into one, while “biting off” a small area for the living room from one of them. Here the kitchen area smoothly transitions into the living room.

The designers logically decided: since the space of the remote area allows, everything that concerns the working surface can be placed in it. With the only exception - the refrigerator is located a little further. And the young dynamic owners assumed that they simply did not need a dining table and limited themselves to a bar counter.

The Russina company offers high-quality kitchen furniture to order. We have extensive experience in successfully designing and manufacturing kitchen furniture for rooms of various layouts. The priority of our company is an individual approach to each Client.

The unusual geometry of the kitchen or the “inopportune” balcony are all serious reasons to order furniture from Russina specialists. For example, if there is a wall protrusion in the room, then we will create a project that will allow it to be “smoothed out”. For example, a unique minibar can help with this. Despite the amazing lightness of such structures, they serve perfectly for placing dishes.
If you are planning to move to a one-room apartment in a new building, then most likely there is a reason to rejoice at the huge kitchen space. And practically of any shape. Today, pentagonal kitchens are most often found in new apartments. Furnishing such a kitchen with taste is not always easy.

Non-standard kitchen furniture - why is it so popular?

There was a time when all houses were built almost the same. The apartments and the furniture in them followed a single standard, surprising with their mediocrity. Suffice it to recall the popular film “The Irony of Fate or Enjoy Your Bath.”
Fortunately, architects and builders have abandoned this practice in favor of attractiveness and comfort. And now custom kitchens are at the peak of popularity. The skill of designers helps to use all possibilities to create the ideal interior.
Specialists of the Russina company go to the Customer, where they measure the premises and create sketches of the future interior. The need for an ideal match of each interior element to the specifics of the room is taken into account.
Any piece of kitchen furniture can vary within wide limits. This applies to shape, width and height. The Russina company will fulfill an individual order, producing furniture of any size in classic, country, minimalist, modern and high-tech styles.
Modern technologies help Russina to produce custom tables and countertops, cabinets and shelves of a wide variety of configurations and shapes. A custom-made kitchen set will organically fit into the kitchen, no matter what its configuration.

When placing an order for the manufacture of furniture according to an individual project, it is advisable to think through its main external characteristics. Among them:

  • Style decision;
  • Color spectrum;
  • Material of manufacture;
  • Decorative decorations.

It is not always easy to determine the best option, especially when such a wide selection is offered as in the Russina company. If even the slightest difficulty arises, our employees will provide professional advice and give useful advice. The convenience of our Clients is our constant priority. We strive to ensure that cooperation is as productive and enjoyable as possible.

A small kitchen is a rather problematic place for creativity. In a small living room, you can free up space by getting rid of an extra chair or table. And in the kitchen - will you take out the stove or refrigerator? Of course not, but we have in store for you several design solutions for arranging a small culinary space.

Today we will help you place all the necessary items and furniture in limited space, and also give you some valuable tips on decor and design. You will learn about clever ways of visual deception that significantly increase the size of the room.

Compact and organized

Let's start with the basics. Compactness, organization, functionality - these are the three pillars on which it rests. Everything should be very discreet and neat. Of course, no one is against decor and design, but you should resist the temptation to fill the usable space with extra shelves, tables and huge floor vases. Choose a stylish set, with smooth walls, without unnecessary protrusions and fixtures. Make the most of the space in the corners, and then there will be at least a little freedom in the center. Avoid unnecessary decor. Do not occupy the work surface with unnecessary things. Unused space, such as walls, ceiling or window sill, is suitable for decoration. They can be stolen by paintings, paintings or drawings. And place vases with flowers or beloved figurines on the window. [by Aidan Design/Houzz]

Use walls for storage

Not everything can be placed in cabinets. Useful wall space is suitable for storing frequently used items. Magnetic holders, hooks and small racks will help you organize clutter and free up space on your shelves. [from Frisson/Houzz]

Practical use of walls

Don't underestimate the power of wall shelves. There are very multifunctional options with metal holders that are ideal for storing glasses, wine bottles or fruit cups. [from Inspired Interior / Houzz]

A kitchen island is the ideal solution for a small space. The compact arrangement of shelves, appliances and cabinets will save a lot of space. In addition, there is a huge selection of models and colors, so there is a good copy for both rustic and modern design. [by Lonny]

No room for a full model? It's OK! Even a reduced variation of the island will help restore order and organize the storage of kitchen utensils. [by Lonny]

More reflective surfaces

There is a little trick for visually increasing space - reflective surfaces. They not only enhance the contrast of colors, but also add shine and lightness to the interior. These do not have to be mirrors; you can buy a set with a glossy finish.

Stainless steel appliances are also reflective. Plus, it will add a touch of modernity to the interior. [from HGTV.com]

Eye-catching color accent

To draw attention away from problem areas, you need a powerful hit of color! Bright contrast will deprive the kitchen of the effect of a cluttered space. It is enough to paint just one wall in a rich shade (for example, turquoise), and the room will sparkle with new colors. [from Granite Gurus]

Fresh fruity shades will help to “unload” the room a little. It is advisable to choose a lighter, pastel shade. Tender lime, orange or banana – the choice is yours! [by Lonny]

Minimalist style is an excellent solution for a small kitchen. But this does not mean that you cannot use different colors. This interesting Ombre style palette is a good example of a non-standard and exotic approach to cabinet design. [by CubeMe]

Creative impulses should not be limited to single accents. How do you like the idea of painting your kitchen a dark, rich shade? If you decorate the walls and floor in a single color scheme, you will create the illusion of expanded space. [from HGTV.com]

Ultra-modern style

Modern kitchen design is characterized by simple furniture and high functionality. It is very difficult to implement a rustic or vintage design in a miniature kitchen, so futurism or modernism is the best choice. [from Apartment Therapy]

Metal decor and steel shades are the main signs of modern style. Mix it all up with the latest appliances and you have a stunning kitchen design. The most preferred shades are gray, ash, black, white and earthy. [from Home & Garden Ideas]

Clever integration into the dining room

One of the simplest and most popular solutions is combining rooms. Tear down unnecessary walls and get a kitchen-dining room or kitchen-living room in one. An island would fit perfectly into such a room – with a continuation in the form of a dining table. [by Diego Bortolato/Houzz]

In Khrushchev-era apartments, small-sized kitchens create great inconvenience.

On average, its area ranges from 3 to 5 square meters and you need to make every effort and ingenuity to turn it into a functional and cozy home.

With a reasonable approach, the design of a small corner kitchen will fit perfectly into a small space.

Features of compact corner kitchens

A corner kitchen in a Khrushchev building is the best option for arranging a room. Photos of successful projects for a typical room are available in large quantities on the Internet.

A corner kitchen, unlike a linear one, is more spacious and functional.

It is necessary to order furniture for such a solution according to individual sizes, since standard serial options will either be too bulky, especially corner trapezoidal cabinets, or have insufficient equipment.

Small spaces will stimulate design ideas and the result will be an unusual and functional interior.

To achieve the intended result, it is necessary to make maximum use of the allocated space.

Options for custom solutions for kitchens

First of all, you need to order wall cabinets so that they are as high as possible.

The free space in the upper part of the kitchen can be used wisely: let rarely used dishes or other kitchen utensils be stored under the ceiling.

Individual layout will help you take up all the necessary space, increasing the level of comfort and complementing the interior.

Before ordering non-standard kitchen elements, you need to carefully consider the location and number of storage boxes: there should not be enough of them, since small rooms exclude the possibility of unnecessary items being in plain sight.

On the contrary, too many lower elements will take up precious space.

Increasing functionality

It would be absolutely useful to use additional mechanisms: automatic closers and gas lifts, roll-out systems and cargo boxes.

Thanks to the use of closers, drawers in tables will always be closed and will not take up free space.

Special roll-out systems or “cargo” can solve the problem of storing non-standard dishes (tall bottles with sunflower oil, vinegar or many small containers for spices). They will not occupy the countertop, which means they will visually expand the space. Don’t forget about the free wall space in kitchens.

You can attach rails for vertical storage of ladles, colanders or small pancake pans. Photos of the necessary additional elements will be provided in any furniture fittings showroom.

Various kitchen designs

The most common solution is to use the space under the window: Instead of a window sill, a tabletop is installed, which is cut in depth to the required dimensions.

Small cabinets with drawers are placed under it or free space is left for stools.

The different heights of wall drawers will perfectly complement the interior: “broken” contours of the kitchen set will give the visual effect of more space.

If the area under the window is not crowded with furniture, the kitchen will also look lighter and more spacious.

In this case, a small bar counter is installed behind the window sill perpendicular to the wall.

This will delimit the space into conventional sectors and, again, add visual volume.

There are options when one of the sides of the corner kitchen is cut in depth to increase free space.

An end cabinet is built into the end of a standard-width tabletop at an angle of 45 degrees to the adjacent wall.

It turns out two useful points at once: an additional storage cabinet and space saving.

Photos of non-standard design solutions will always be available from a company engaged in individual kitchen projects.

Such photos are taken with the customer’s permission immediately after installing kitchen furniture at home.

Kitchens in the minimalist style will become just as relevant and fit well into the interior.

Small-sized narrow cabinets will laconically emphasize the desired style. Photos of minimalist style designs are available on the websites of kitchen manufacturers.

The most common mistakes that spoil the interior

The process of planning a small kitchen is quite complex and requires attention to all details. In this case, there are also some shortcomings.

When color doesn't work for you

The most common mistake is oversaturation with dark tones.

For example, a kitchen set made in dark wenge color will be visually too bulky, and given the large number of wall cabinets, it will also be depressing.

The interior of a small kitchen should be either bright or as light as possible.

If you really can’t do without dark elements, you can correct the situation by ordering only the lower cabinets dark and the top light, or if the style allows, alternating black and white facades.

Stripes and non-standard furniture geometry

The striped texture of the facades (zebrawood, macassar) is also not desirable in a small kitchen.

Too many stripes will make you feel uncomfortable in the kitchen, as your eyes will always be strained in a small room.

Frequent stripes will instantly reduce space.

As a way out of this situation, you can consider the option when one or two facades can be made striped, and the rest plain and light.

In this case, they will bring unusualness to the interior and will not overload it.

The same applies to the non-standard geometric shape of kitchen furniture: it will attract increased attention, and too large non-standard sizes (especially the lower sections) They will take up all the useful space.

In this case, not only will it be impossible for several people to sit in the kitchen, but it will also be difficult for one person to turn around there.

Photos of unsuccessful non-standard solutions, as a rule, are on many thematic sites under the “how not to do” section.

Location of household appliances

It is difficult to compactly fit large-sized household appliances into a small room. The best option would be to use built-in models.

In cases where you cannot do without a full-size model, try to choose a narrower option.

It is best to choose a light color: white or beige.

It is advisable to place it on the edge of the set, with the possibility of installing a wall cabinet above it. Photos of the necessary equipment are available on the websites of manufacturers.

By correctly and scrupulously approaching the design of a corner kitchen in small spaces, you can achieve good results and maximum comfort.

You need to pay attention to everything - from style and color, to the size of the drawers and the direction the cabinet door opens.
