The most economical option when using a large diameter pipe or barrel is a horizontal cylindrical arrangement. However, long pipes are often used to make a vertical barbecue grill with a pointed top edge, which provides a high aesthetic value to the fireplace.

The most common method for making a barbecue roaster remains a 200-liter metal barrel. There are several cutting methods, installation options and chimney designs. This instruction describes how to build a barbecue from a barrel with your own hands with a small lid of a regular rectangular shape.

Lid

The design is very simple, which allows you to do without drawings/sketches. At the initial stage, a hatch is cut out of the barbecue barrel:

  • width - you need to retreat 5–10 cm from each edge to ensure the rigidity of the roaster frame;
  • height - approximately 1/3 of the circumference of the barrel.

The cut out part becomes the lid, hinged to one side of the longitudinal horizontal cut. The hinges can be welded, secured with screws or rivets to the lid and body parts.

For ease of use, a handle made of non-flammable material is mounted on the lid. If necessary, you can add a bolt to protect against spontaneous opening in winter during snowfall.

Attention! A thin-walled barrel usually loses its spatial geometry after cutting out the hatch. Therefore, along the edges of the cut from the inside, the body of the barrel is reinforced with a corner, on the shelf of which the barbecue grill will later be placed.

Grate unit

For a uniform layer of coal, a cylindrical surface is unsuitable by default. Therefore, it is necessary to place a grate at a distance of 10–15 cm from the convex bottom of the roasting pan. It performs several functions:

  • provides a smooth surface for coals;
  • allows ash to fall freely downwards;
  • can be removed to clean the fryer from combustion products.

The barbecue should be sized as shown in the drawings and photographs below so that the meat cooks quickly without burning.

To fix the grate, corners are used along the body of the barrel, attached to it with rivets, bolts or welding.

Lattice

By analogy with the previous step, the lattice is placed on several supports. If a corner is already welded on one side to strengthen the body of the fryer, the home craftsman will only have to add a second corner opposite it.

A barbecue made in this way is universal. If necessary, you can place skewers on these same corners.

The most common side chimney scheme among users is:

  • in the upper third of the end part of the barrel, a hole is made for a chimney with a diameter of 57–89 mm;
  • a 90 degree bend is welded into it;
  • a 1–1.5 m piece of pipe is welded to the outlet from above;
  • A visor is installed on top of it.

If the fireplace is protected from bad weather by a canopy or canopy, you can use a rectangular or round hood. If you increase the size of such a hood, the galvanized “umbrella” becomes an independent roof.

The optimal height for operation is considered to be 0.8–1.2 m from the ground to the side of the roaster. A cylindrical hearth with a chimney is by default part of a smokehouse or grill oven, which is convenient for the owner of a suburban area.

From the pipe

An economical roaster for cooking meat on a grill is practically no different from the previous version from a barrel. Simply, the barbecue pipe is first suppressed on both sides with parts cut from sheet steel. The service life is significantly higher than that of a barrel, since in this case the metal thickness is greater. Even when cutting out the manhole cover, the spatial geometry is preserved; the structure does not need to be reinforced with an angle.

If there is a sufficient amount of thick-walled metal, a blank of complex shape is cut out of the pipe with your own hands. The pipe should be 1.8–2 m long, it must be installed vertically at the end, and a cutting line must be drawn at an angle from a level of 1 m to the upper opposite part of the structure (as in the photo below).

When cutting yourself with an angle grinder (angle grinder), it is very difficult to mark the cutting line, so you should first draw a template on paper/cardboard.

Additional elements are located at different levels:

  • barbecue grill - at the lower edge of the cut, to fix it along the diameter, several corners are welded;
  • the grate is 15–20 cm lower than the previous grate; corners are also attached to it around the perimeter from the inside;
  • ash door - just below the grate on any convenient side, welded on hinges to the body, equipped with a latch and handle;
  • plug - since the body of the pipe serves as a stand for the fryer, the ash compartment is too large, so the structure is plugged under the ash pan door.

Attention! Barbecues do not use a chimney with this option, as it sharply reduces the aesthetics of the perception of the structure. Instead, a round or square hood is usually installed.

It will not be possible to cover the cut part of the pipe, so a standard round lid is used, installed instead of the barbecue grill.

Additional functions and decoration

Before making a barbecue for a suburban area, you should decide on the operating mode:

How to cut a barrel correctly

The next stage is to work with the main structural part - the barrel. This is a very important point in the manufacturing process. The further quality of the entire structure depends on the evenness of the lines and the uniformity of the cut. Before starting work, use a tape measure and a marker to mark the cutting lines. If necessary, remove the barrel from the raised platform and then secure it back in place.

First cut option:

  1. Using a grinder, only part of the container is cut out, which will later serve as a lid. Its size should be 1/4 of the circumference of the barrel.
  2. Leave 2-5 cm on each edge.
  3. The edges of the cuts are cleaned and irregularities are smoothed out.
  4. After the work has been completed, the dimensions and configuration of the corner for finishing the cutout are determined.

  2. From the halves you can make two full barbecues or one in which one part will serve as a lid.

At each stage of work, utmost attention is required, since any deviation or distortion can affect the stability of the structure. All preliminary workpieces are installed on a convenient surface, and then fastened by welding at a right angle.

How to make a grill with a cutout

After the barrel is cut, a chimney is made. For this purpose, steel pipes with a diameter of 70 mm are used at an angle of 45°. Connect both sections of the pipe in the form of an elbow. The joint is carefully welded to eliminate the possibility of gaps.

The inside of the grill barrel is finally cleaned. For this, special microwave oven cleaning products are used, especially if the walls inside were full of liquid oil.

Since the size of the barbecue stand depends on personal preferences and the size of the barrel, you will have to make it yourself. It is made from a profile pipe with a rectangular cross-section. The frame is made folding and consists of two rectangles.

The size of the pipes should be comparable to the volume of the barrel (for example, for a 100 l container - 20x30 mm, and for 200 l - 30x50 mm, respectively). Frames are welded from pipes, one of which is slightly larger, and the second is smaller (fits inside the first). The frames are secured with a bolt in the center (the bolt is used as a hinge). A washer is placed between the frames to create a gap.

Then a piece of the barrel is installed, which will serve as a lid on the main part, and with a marker, the places where the door hinges will be attached are marked. Next, using bolts and nuts, the hinges are attached first to the lid and then to the main part of the grill. To prevent the lid from falling inward during use, a steel strip is welded to it on the sides.

Then a voluminous door handle is attached to the barbecue from a barrel, or it can be welded from a profile pipe, as in the photo.

To hold the grate, several steel wires (8-10 mm in diameter) are installed across the entire barrel. On both sides of the bottom row, the wire should protrude 8 cm from the end of the barrel wall. By welding a piece of similar wire between them, you can get handles for installing or moving the barbecue.

Order of placement of steel fasteners

A round hole is cut in the upper part of the side wall of the barrel to install the chimney. Holes are made at the bottom of the cylinder for ventilation. Smaller holes are drilled in the middle of the grill for drainage. If you want to install a temperature regulator, you will need another hole in the lid for mounting.

A hook is attached to the back of the lid to secure the two parts in the open position. This is a very necessary device that will allow you to safely use a barbecue from a barrel. After all, it will be blocked.

The principle of constructing a barbecue with a lid is practically no different from the option described above. But in this case, it is necessary to frame the edges with a metal corner, which can be attached by welding or screws.

Only at first glance this design seems very complicated. To create it you will need two barrels. The grill and smokehouse are made exactly according to the diagram. The most difficult part of this process is connecting the two containers together and making a door at the bottom for adding firewood.

The device is original, but not very practical, since it is rare to use a barbecue and a smokehouse together. And heating the structure is very difficult. Therefore, it is better to make them separately and removable, using the same stand for installation.

Painting the grill according to all the rules

  • Silicone enamels that can withstand temperatures up to 600ºC.

  • Oxidation is a rather complicated procedure, but it can be done even at home. The grill parts are degreased with sulfuric acid. Next, they are boiled in a soap solution and boiled in a sodium solution for 1.6 hours. After which the product is coated with a non-stick layer that can protect the metal from corrosion.

Before you make a barbecue, you need to select a barrel of the most convenient volume. Practice shows that 100-liter cavities are optimal in size. However, when making compact portable models, even a fifty-liter container is suitable. It is easier to transport in almost any car.

When fuels and lubricants were stored in a barrel, the surface became saturated with harmful odors. You can partially get rid of them by letting water sit inside it for a long time. The fluid will have to be renewed every few weeks. Later, the finished product will need to be calcined several times with wood without meat to disinfect the surface.

The list of necessary tools consists of the following items:

  • construction tape and square;
  • an angle grinder and a couple of metal wheels;
  • induction welding machine or “dragon”;
  • low speed drill;
  • jigsaw with metal blade;
  • steel sheet 2-3 mm thick;
  • a pair of metal canopies and fasteners for them.

Convenient to have side handles for carrying. You can buy them ready-made (from metal only) at a hardware store or bend them yourself from a rod, reinforcement, or from a profile hexagon.

The mobile model will require wheels. It is not recommended to take too small ones, as they will not overcome obstacles well. The most comfortable diameter is in the range of 12-20 cm.

Frame making

The height of the frame is selected according to the height of the owner of the product. The optimal parameter for it will be in the range of 0.9-1.0 m from the ground. The width and length depend on the dimensions of the barrel. The base platform is welded in the shape of the letter “H”. At the welding units we install two vertical posts about 0.9 m in height. At the top they end in V-shaped, U-shaped or U-shaped barrel holders.

At a height of 15-20 cm from the ground, we will weld a sheet metal shelf, which will strengthen the structure and serve as an additional device during barbecue preparation. Thin metal will not weigh down the structure much.

If necessary, we attach wheel blocks to the four lower corners. They rotate 3600 around their axis. They can be found at a hardware store.

Making a stove

There are two options:

  • The barrel is laid on its side and, using a grinder, is opened along the axis into two equal parts. One part will serve as a lid, and the second will be a firebox.
  • The bottom and top flat surface of the barrel are left intact, and four cuts are made to remove the segment. Two parallel cuts run along the axis at a distance of a quarter turn. And the third and fourth cuts separate the segment from the bottom and top.

In both cases we screw the lid onto the canopies. The base of the barrel is welded to the frame. The internal cavity needs a grille. We take it ready-made or weld it from rods. To prevent it from falling inside, we will use one of the options:

  • We weld the legs to the bottom side at the four corners to ensure maximum stability.

  • Inside the firebox, we weld limiters to the walls, moving 15-20 mm from the top. They can be made from four pieces of half-inch or quarter-inch tube, 50-60 mm long. With them, the grate will not fall in or slide off, losing its balance.

What paint to use

The outer surface is treated with heat-resistant paint. Today there is a wide variety of paint and varnish products on the market, from which you can choose anyone according to your wallet and color. In this case, the paint must be designed for temperatures of at least 800 degrees (this information is indicated on the labeling). In addition, the product is first primed and only then painted.

Experts in the manufacture of barbecues and barbecues recommend using paints for car mufflers. This is a heat-resistant, practically “indestructible” paint, which, compared to other analogues, has a high class of environmental friendliness.

  • welding machine;

Besides this, you need to prepare the basic and auxiliary materials from which the grill will be made:

  • fastening bolts for connecting parts;
  • metal corner for framing the edges of a cut barrel, with shelves 20x20 mm;
  • pipe Ø 20 mm or square 20×20 - they are needed for making legs and supporting brackets for the barrel;
  • if a version with a lid is made, then window hinges and a handle for lifting the lid will be needed;
  • two metal gratings;
  • for ease of moving the barbecue, you can attach 2 or 4 wheels to the legs .

Manufacturing process

The process of making a barbecue needs to start with developing the model that you would like to receive.

1. The first thing to do is to draw up a detailed drawing of the barbecue according to a pre-drawn sketch. You need to put all the dimensions on the diagram - it will help you clearly follow the plan without being distracted by additional fittings.

The plan drawing looks something like this. But the barrel stand can have a different shape - choose the one you like.

2. When the diagram with dimensions is ready, you can begin preparing individual parts:

  • cut angle and pipes;
  • prepare fasteners: hinges, screws and bolts of the required size.

3. Next comes quite complex work with the main structural element - the barrel. It needs to be cut in one of two ways. Only part of the barrel can be cut out, which will then become the lid,

After the container is cut, all its edges are carefully processed with a grinding wheel so that no burrs remain on them.

Option one

  • If the barrel is cut in half, its cut edges are framed with a metal corner - it is secured by welding or screws.
  • There is another option when the second half of the barrel is used as a lid. In this case, its edges are also tied with a corner.
  • The two parts are fastened with hinges so that the lid can open and close freely.
  • To prevent the lid from tilting back completely, On the one side make a movable mount.
  • A metal handle is attached to the top. It is better to weld it in the same way as the corners.
  • The hole for the plug, which is in each barrel, is quite suitable for securing the chimney. The only thing that needs to be taken into account when cutting a container, if a lid is planned on it, the hole for the plug should be in the upper part or lid, approximately 30 degrees from the center.
